Current Events Cheat Sheet: Presidential Hair?
January 16, 2012 Posted in News

Mitt Romney snagged a double-digit victory in the New Hampshire primary on Tuesday. The win came only days after his success in Iowa, making him the first non-incumbent Republican presidential candidate to win both states in a row. He grabbed 39% of the vote, 16 points ahead of the closest challenger, Ron Paul. Even though he won, nobody’s surprised. Romney is from Massachusetts, which borders New Hampshire, and many considered him the automatic winner in most New England states. Now, everyone is talking about what is going to happen in the South Carolina primary coming up this week. People are also talking about Mitt’s hair, which is supposedly perfectly presidential, and just meant to be in the White House. Ok…
A video showing American Marines peeing on Taliban corpses went viral on the Internet. The clip shows four soldiers joking and laughing as they urinate on the dead bodies of two men from the Taliban. People across the world are disgusted and outraged, and many are worried that it couldn’t have come at a worse time. Obama is currently trying to promote reconciliation between the Afghan government and the Taliban, but the images (which Taliban leaders called “shameful”) could derail those efforts. But is it even a big deal? Hamilton Nolan at Gawker doesn’t think so: “Do you know what is worse than having your dead body urinated upon? Being killed. Being shot. Being bombed. Having your limbs blown off. Having your house incinerated by a drone-fired missile that you don’t see until it explodes. Having your children blown up in their beds.”
The TSA (Transportation Security Administration) announced that challengers left a total of $409,085.56 at security checkpoints in 2010. JFK Airport in NYC brought in the biggest bucks, with a total of $47,000 being collected from traveler’s jingling pockets. The money is supposedly collected and added to the TSA’s general operations fund, but I’m sure they could think of something better to do with the change. Use it to offset checked baggage fees? Offer every traveler a free cupcake? Any other ideas?

I like this series. Journalism classes at my school require weekly current events quizzes. This equals last minute scrolling and searching for those important articles my professor will test us on. Having a summary on a website I check almost daily reminds me to do my homework! lol. Thanks for the hard work, Avery.
