January Jones Eats Her Own Placenta!

I’m going to tell you all a little story. Once upon a time, my Creative Writing professor told our class that after she gave birth to her first child, she admitted that she ate her own placenta for dinner. I’ll allow you guys to let that sink in for a moment.

I think I sat there with what I can only imagine was a horrified expression mixed with a twinge of disgust. She went on to tell us that she saved the placenta from the births of both her sons and froze it. In the family freezer. Like along with their meat and frozen veggies. She said that her husband had also consumed it once or twice due to his curiosity (Side note: I also had her husband as a chemistry professor my freshman year of college, and he was just as, if not MORE, insane than she was). She went on to tell us that “consuming the afterbirth” is a really spiritual and calming activity that helps a mother bond closer with her child. It also provides nutrients and other stuff that you can’t get from other foods.

Nutrients and other junk would not be reason enough for me to eat my own placenta. I’m sorry for all you supporters of this, but I just cannot get this wrapped around my head. I don’t understand, and I probably never will. My mom didn’t eat her own placenta and I turned out pretty well. So I don’t see the necessity in this.

Like my college professor, Mad Men actress January Jones has admitted to doing the same thing. That’s right. Betty Draper eats her own placenta. What do you guys think about all this? She recommends it to all moms and has no shame in her game when it comes to eating her own placenta, but are you grossed out like me? I can’t ever see a woman just taking some placenta out of the freezer and then cooking it with her stew or something. Maybe January just gets it and I don’t. Here are some pictures of January walking around town with her belly. I wonder if in all these photos she’s just thinking about how she’s going to eat her placenta. Little bit of salt? Some seasoning? Yummy.

What do you guys think? Gross? Insanely gross? Or kind of cool? Let us know in the comments!

I agree that it's kind of squicky, but the way it's done is actually pretty clean. Most people have it dehydrated then powdered and made into capsules, which supposedly help ease post-partum depression and increase milk production since most mammals do eat the placenta.
    Science: sometimes cool, often icky.

"Most people" is really not very many people. Not like 1 in 100 people take home their placenta. I don't think it's even 1 in 1000. It 's like saying most people prefer to shoot up herion between their toes to hide track marks.

She's insane! I wonder if there's a scientific evidence that placenta provides more nutrients that other foods don't. Maybe she did it only to make a sensation, nothing more….otherwise it sounds cult…

I feel like I shouldn't judge the choices women make after they give birth, seeing as I've never done it, but this grosses me out. I read an interview with January Jones where she was like, "Oh yeah, humans are the only mammals who don't eat our own placenta." January: did you think that maybe there's a reason for that? Like the fact that humans have access to sources of nutrients other than the placenta?

Okay, it's gross but really, comparing it to heroin? C'mon. I think plenty of things people eat are gross, but that doesn't make them a bad person or crazy – it just means that I won't be over for dinner.
