Naked Navy Guys Climb A Phallic, Lard Covered Pole [WTF Friday + Photos]

Most campuses all over the country have traditions for their freshman. Some have ended since their inception, like at Syracuse University. Once upon a time all freshman had to wear beanies to show their lowest man on the totem pole status. By the late 1960s the “lids” fizzled out. I’m just happy I didn’t have to ruin my hair fifty years later.

But at some campuses, traditions are alive and well. Luckily for us, one of those schools is Annapolis Naval Academy. At Annapolis, the freshman class of “plebs” has to climb a greased up monument. No, it’s not for our viewing pleasure, but rather to exchange the Plebeian sailor’s hat at the top with an officer’s. And thus, boys are made into men. Or, at least they’re closer to men than before. Did this happen to James Franco in Annapolis and no one told me? And if it didn’t…why not?

It's not the Annapolis Naval Academy, it's the United States Naval Academy that is located in Annapolis, MD. This is the Herndon Monument and it has more tradition behind it than just being "phallic".
