Dear Tuffy Luv,

My roommate is so inconsiderate I don’t know what to do. She plays music all night. I tried to tell her it bothers me but she doesn’t seem to care. She doesn’t bring home boys or anything but the music is enough to really irk me. I’ve already talked to her and I’m stuck living with her for the summer semester. What do I do?

Good Roommate

Dear Good Roommate,

Okay, wow, yeah, that sucks. It probably makes it really hard to study, no? And that’s your in. You have to go to the RA or whoever is in charge of your floor (I’m assuming this is campus housing, yes?) and say: “She’s playing music all night and it’s making it hard to study.”

Easy peezy lemon squeezy. Because, like, you don’t want to go in being all “she’s so annoying” and shoop. No whining. No calling yourself the “good” roommate.

Actually, before you go the RA, I’d try her one more time. Sit her down and say, “I know you like to listen to music, but I really need you to listen with headphones after X o’clock at night. It’s disrupting my studying and my sleeping habits. I’m sorry, but this is non-negotiable for me. If we can’t figure out a way to make this work for both of us, maybe we can take it to the RA for mediation.”

And if she is totally crazed, take it to the RA — with or without her. And if she is STILL crappy, then I think you’re totally within your rights to request a new roommate.
