Confession: I’m Really Not A Fan Of One Direction

Okay, crazy fans. Come at me bro. I certainly understand the appeal of One Direction given I am from the boy band era, but I’m just not digging them. Back in my day when we had N’SYNC, Backstreet Boys, 98 Degrees, etcetera. As kind of the boy band originators, I suppose we didn’t really have a choice but to like them and their catchy tunes. You picked a band by a feeling and you were a fan for life. Kind of like imprinting in Twilight. I am an N’SYNCer through and through. We’ve been over this before, so I’ll spare you the details again. Although, I still appreciate the music of the other boy bands of the time and every now and then I jam out to Backstreet. I still have the original N’SYNC CD in my car.

But these One Direction kids just aren’t doing it for me. Maybe it’s because they’re younger than me? No, because I’ll let you know that I love me some Justin Bieber even though he seems like kind of a douche. 1D seems to have this attitude that the boy bands of my age didn’t develop until they hit platinum. They know they’re superstars, and they’re quickly becoming divas. Have you listened to anything else they’ve done besides What Makes You Beautiful? It’s not great.

Maybe it’s because Harry Styles kind of looks like the young version of a guy I used to date. Maybe it’s because Niall Horan called some of his fans the c-word. Maybe it’s because they have no competition. I think it’s a combination. But really, they don’t have another boy band to compete against. It’s frustrating for people from the boy band era because we had choices. Kids these days don’t have a choice! You can like Bieber and One Direction because Bieber isn’t a boy band. One Direction has it too easy because they’re no competition for them. They’re just expecting young girls to fawn all over them. And apparently older ones too since Harry likes his ladies older. Like married.

So yeah, I don’t really like 1D. And I’m okay with that because I’m going to go listen to some Ed Sheeran (a way cooler Brit) and The Script (way cooler Irish dudes who play instruments) and not have my ears fall off.

What do you think of One Direction? Are you a fan or are you over it?

YES! I totally agree. I still don't understand all the hype behind One Direction. "What Makes You Beautiful" is pretty catchy, but I have no idea about their other songs.

I tried to listen to some of their other songs, and I just couldn't power through. It was so bad.

Ed Sheeran is absolutely amazing, and terribly unknown! I don't get the hype either, these kids have nothing on the boy bands of our era.

Definitely agree, they're cute (in a small puppy way, not a hot way), but hate their music

I'm just confused on what the weather is in that lead photo. Who's actually dressed properly, inquiring minds need to know!
I love their hits but wouldn't want to listen to anything else.

Seriously! I don't know if it's hot or cold or if they all just have very different body temperatures. It's very confusing.

I always give people blank stares when they compare them to N*SYNC… I feel like the boy bands of the 00's are much younger and more innocent than our beloved 90's boys.

oh my gosh, have you actually listened to their music? They're really good! Check out "moments" on youtube! And here is the thing, I am not their fan. I dont' even know their names. And I don't care. That is for crazy girl fans to obsess about. But when it comes to the sound, the beats, the lyrics, these guys are actually pretty cool! I have their whole album downloaded from iTunes with no regrets. My 15 year old niece loves them, and we listen to 1D everytime driving in a car!

I love One Direction, but i understand what you're saying. Their music is mediocre. I just like their personalities, really.

Tell us what you're thinking...
