So Alex and I were watching Modern Family on Hulu and all of a sudden a commercial popped up for NuvaRing. We thought it would be a normal commercial where they ramble off side effects and what not. FALSE. It featured two girls hanging out at some concert just casually talking about NuvaRing. Let me play out this conversation for you:
Girl 1: Oh the band is coming on at 4, I totes need to take my pill.
Girl 2: You’re still on the pill?
Girl 1: Duh like there aren’t any other contraceptive options, aren’t you?
Girl 2: No my doctor gave me this plastic vaginal ring.
Girl 1: Shhhh you can’t say vaginal we’re at a concert!
Girl 2: Well it’s so easy you just stick it up there.
Girl 1: I don’t think I can stick one of those up there.
Girl 2: You just squeeze it and put it in and then you hook it and pull it out.
Girl 1: Oh so like this? (Makes stupid hand gestures)
BUT WAIT. So then these two dudes who are picnicking at this concert together as well see this hand gesture and think the girls are waving at them so they do it back. Um. What?
This commercial is one out of three in NuvaRing’s Oh! series, which you can watch here. They’re all super creepy. If you’re on NuvaRing, great! You have chosen a contraceptive method that works for you. If you’re on the pill, that’s great too! But why is it that NuvaRing makes taking a pill out to be some extraordinary hassle? It makes taking the pill seem like how painful the Snuggie commercial shows using a regular blanket. And why are these girls talking about vaginal rings at a concert around a bunch of people? That ain’t right!
It made me feel worse than a stupid tampon commercial where the girls are wearing white and twirling through a field of daisies. Can’t we just get back to normal commercials that explain the benefits and side effects? Sure, those aren’t the sexiest commercials, but these new ones are weird and are making everyone uncomfortable. Almost as uncomfortable as shoving a plastic ring up your hoo-ha.
What are your thoughts on these commercials? Do you use NuvaRing? Is it really that much better than taking the pill?
