Jackie from Krispy Kreme Will Restore Your Faith in the World [Current Events Cheat Sheet]
I would really, really love it if there was just one week where this column didn’t involve me writing about people killing each other. Yeah, sorry to be a downer. Call me Miss America, but all I want is world peace! Luckily, we’ve got a viral video this week that will cheer you up after you make it through the sad headlines.
The numbers were drawn for the biggest Powerball lottery jackpot in history. One set of winners from Missouri has been identified, but there is still some confusion surrounding another winning ticket bought in Arizona.
Jovan Belcher, who was a linebacker with the Kansas City Chiefs, shot his girlfriend and then killed himself at the Arrowhead stadium.
Mallory Owens, an Alabama woman, was attacked and brutally beaten by her girlfriend’s brother over the Thanksgiving holiday. She has released a statement through GLAAD, saying that she still fears for her life and that her attacker has threatened to finish her off.

Despite U.S. efforts to prevent Iran from supplying weapons to the Syrian government, the weapons are being easily transported through Iraqi airspace. Iraq’s government is reluctant to perform random inspections of planes that fly through its airspace.
And speaking of Syria, the internet there went down completely for two days. Members of the opposition say that it was the government waging “a mental war” against its people.
Ronda Rousey, who became the first American woman to win an Olympic medal in Judo this summer, has also become the first woman to sign with UFC. Only a year ago, the league declared it would never sign a female fighter. Recently, she told an interviewer that she tries to have “as much sex as possible” before her fights.
People are fat shaming baseball player Derek Jeter, who is currently recovering from an injury.
Hot on the Web
This week’s viral video will (hopefully) cheer you up a bit after that depressing news. A man who was trying to start a “Rejection Therapy” project, by asking people to do things they would definitely say no to, was disappointed (in the best way) when he went to a Krispy Kreme. He asked for donuts in the shape of the Olympic rings to be done in 15 minutes, expecting he’d get an automatic no. Instead, Jackie, the employee who helped him, went above and beyond to fulfill his request and she did it on the house. We need more Jackies in the world. Check out the video below.
Garnet is a student at Columbia University in New York City. She is “that person” who starts dancing at a party when everyone else is standing around, and if there were a Facebook stalking Olympics, she would be a gold medalist. She also loves cheesy 90s music, and almost died of happiness when Vanilla Ice retweeted her. Once. Follow her on Twitter @garnethenderson.
