The best way to get more women on television and in movies is to get more women behind the scenes. There might be less sexism today but at the end of the day people hire who they know and who is like them so men will tend to hire men and when mostly men are in charge, you’re just going to get more men! Give some ladies some power and now we’re talking equality, kiddos. Zooey Deschanel and HelloGiggles co-founder, Sophia Rossi have started their own television production company.
According to Deadline:
“The New Girl star has launched a production company with her Hello Giggles partner Sophia Rossi, which has inked a two-year first-look deal with 20th Century Fox TV, the studiobehind New Girl. Under the pact, Deschanel and Rossi will develop new projects for the studio.”
What’s great is that Fox has specifically picked them up to create better programming for young women. I am not super into Zooey’s whimsical quirk but lots of people are and the more different female voices we have the more different kinds of women we have on television which is great.
20th TV Chairman Gary Newman said,“We’ve known Zooey as an actress through New Girl, and as we got to know her as a producer through the script she developed, we quickly realized that there is so much more to her. Zooey and Sophia have their finger on the pulse of young people and particularly young women, and we really responded to that.”
I’d be interested to see the kinds of things these two come up with and just how much freedom they’re given as producers. Check out Zooey and Sophia in this way too long video.
