President Barack Obama has barely started his second term, and already there’s speculation about who the presidential candidates will be in 2016. That’s largely because Hillary Clinton has stepped down as Secretary of State, which has led people to wonder if she’s planning on making another bid for the presidency. Her approval ratings and popularity are higher than ever, thanks in part to the kickass job she did as Secretary of State, but also thanks to the Texts From Hillary meme (of course). If Hillary did run, and if she won, she would obviously become the first female president of the United States.

I’d love it if Hillary would run, but there’s also a good chance that she won’t. The woman has been involved in politics for longer than I’ve been alive – her careers in law and politics started well before her husband Bill was ever president. And the past few years as Secretary of State were intense for Hillary. She had an incredibly rigorous travel schedule, and was America’s chief diplomat through some sticky situations nationally and internationally. I couldn’t blame her for wanting to take some time off.

But let’s be clear: it’s time for the United States to have a female president. Honestly, it’s embarrassing that we have yet to elect a woman to our highest office. So if not Hillary, who might become our first woman president? Here are eight of the most prominent women in political office now, who you might expect to see on a presidential ticket some day.

Garnet is a student at Columbia University in New York City. She is “that person” who starts dancing at a party when everyone else is standing around, and if there were a Facebook stalking Olympics, she would be a gold medalist. She also loves cheesy 90s music, and almost died of happiness when Vanilla Ice retweeted her. Once. Follow her on Twitter @garnethenderson.
