The MTV VMAs Move To Brooklyn, Get Hipster Swag
Normally MTV’s Video Music Awards hops back and forth from New York to Los Angeles, choosing different venues each year in both cities. I remember small stints in other large U.S. cities like Miami for the 2004 and 2005 shows, and then Las Vegas for the show in 2007, but fans are pretty used to the two largest and most celeb-dense cities being chosen. For this year’s 30th MTV VMA’s, producers have selected the Barclays Center in Brooklyn as their venue, which was made popular by artists like Jay-Z.
I think this is an awesome choice for MTV. In the past decade Brooklyn has become a borough with an increase in artistic energy and young talent, a perfect place for a large organization to take root in the up-and-coming creativity that will later drive its success. It’s still in a very large, easily-accessible location, just with a little bit of new character that audiences may not be used to.
The awards are set to air on Aug. 25, 2013 but not much else has been revealed to the public as of yet regarding the program’s content. Because of Jay-Z and Beyoncé’s ties to the area I think it’s pretty likely that they will have some large role in the program, most likely large performances. Maybe we’ll even see a little MGMT during the evening.
I could see a return of FOB after their recent reunion, and I hope Justin and Jay maybe do a little tag-team performing to round off their Legends of Summer tour that ends on Aug. 16…please make time guys! Go out with a bang!
It just seems like the best parts of the show are the events that really, really surprise producers and fans alike. Let’s hope at least a little something doesn’t go according to plan to spice up our entertainment just a smidge. A little streaking, a drunken-normally-classy-and-put-together celeb accepting an award, or even another Kanye temper tantrum (except leave T-Swift alone this time!) could really put the cherry on top of one of the only nights of the year that MTV still seems just a little bit legitimate…don’t mess it up!
