With the end of the academic semester approaching fast (and the inevitable freak out that will come with it), the faint taste of summer is getting sweeter and sweeter. And of course, there’s the overarching image of ourselves strutting our stuff on a beach somewhere, or rocking our favorite bikini while showing off sun-kissed skin by the poolside. Basiclaly, we’ll be looking pretty darn good – if we do say so ourselves.
We’re also a little too preoccupied with trying to make sure we look and feel great (emphasis on the feeling great part, ladies…after all, its all about owning it)! Even still, a little more toning will do the body good, and we already know how great we’ll feel after we work out! And with this mindset, there’s no better time than now to consider investing in some equipment to enhance virtually any workout!
Why spend the money, you ask? Here are a few good reasons to part with your cash in favor of some new exercise gear:
1. Your Usual Routine Isn’t Cutting It
Depending on how long you’ve stuck to the same workout, you might be experiencing one of the classic issues with exercising on your own: plateauing. A lot of times, we get used to one way of working out, and never really switch it up because we’re comfortable with it. But, this also allows our bodies to adapt to this type of routine, and after some time, our body is no longer challenged and it won’t improve anymore, keeping us at a steady spot, rather than leading us to continuously improve. When this happens, adding in weights or some other equipment can make a huge difference in the difficulty and challenge level of the workout, and also make it more interesting and fun!
2. You’re Not Feeling It With Your Old Gear
Keeping with the idea of challenging our bodies, if you’ve worked out with the same equipment for a longer period of time, chances are, this equipment isn’t doing it for you either! When this happens, it’s really beneficial to invest in some heavier weights or the next-level fitness equipment that will help you keep improving your fitness level, as opposed to maintaining it (though maintaining it is also good too, if that’s what you want).
3. You Want to Spice Up Your Workout
There are only so many mat/floor routines you can do without weights or other gear. I’m definitely big on body -weight exercises – as you all should know by now – but when it comes to toning, there is definitely a whole other level that can be achieved with weights and resistance. If you’re over your old routines that don’t have any equipment, you’re running out of new ideas for workouts, you think you’ve hit a plateau, or you just want more, investing in some new tools to make your workout and your improvements even better!
That being said, CHECK OUT THIS LIST from Shape Magazine: it comes complete with links to routines and links to the products! A few things to note: while 3-pound free-weights are great for beginners and ladies who usually opt for cardio over weights and are getting their feet wet, you experienced fit chicks definitely want to up the weight a bit. When picking free-weights, you should feel some resistance with your first few reps, and then it should get progressively more difficult, so keep this in mind!
Like every girl knows she can’t go out without her wing-woman, when it comes to fitness, we have our go-to equipment, and somehow it just makes every workout complete! Pick out some awesome gear and get moving on your summertime fitness goal!
