Did you watch this season of RuPaul’s Drag Race? Have you watched any of it? Girl, it’s on Netflix and you need to make it your number one priority. If you’re unfamiliar with the cultural phenomenon that is RuPaul’s Drag Race, I’ll explain. The show is a combination of America’s Next Top Model, Project Runway and Paris Is Burning (yes, drag queens). If you find the idea of a man dressing up in women’s clothing off putting then that’s all the more reason you need to watch this show. Not only is it an educational experience because you learn about the struggles, identities and subculture behind drag queens, gay men and transgendered people – it is so funny. No – no – it is so funny.
Are you familiar with the term ratchet? I think you are. These drag queens are ratchet and clever. Each has the ability to throw shade like no other (there are actually throwing shade competitions on the show!) and they are each fierce divas in their own way. Really, the show is about being and loving yourself for the fabulous, unique and strong person you truly are despite any adversity or circumstances you’ve been thrown into. It’s also, really bitchy. Could you ask for more?! Here are just 18 of the many, many life lessons I’ve taken to heart from watching RuPaul’s Drag Race.
