I always tell my boyfriend that he’s addicted to his phone, but in reality, I don’t think I’m much better. I’m constantly texting, tweeting, Instagraming, and Facebooking. Whether it’s from my phone or my computer, I am consistently “plugged in.” What if I decided not to be plugged in for an extended period of time? What if I just lived in the present moment, looked at the world through my own two eyes instead of my iPhone screen while I snapped a picture that I would soon put a filter on with the hashtag “#instawow”? What if I just turned off all the machines around me that run my life and did things a little differently? Obviously this thought terrifies me because who the heck knows how to live in today’s society anymore without technology? Do we even know how to do that?
We are constantly updating and upgrading, posting photos, liking statuses and check-ins, but why do we do this? Do we feel the need to let everyone else know how wonderful our lives are? Or how wonderful our lives appear to be when you tell that story on a social media outlet? What if I went on a date with my boyfriend, but didn’t tweet or Instagram it? Would it feel less real? Would I be bummed that no one knew that I was out and about? If a girl goes to a cupcake shop, and doesn’t put the photos on Instagram, was she ever actually at the cupcake shop? You get the idea.
With all these questions running through my mind, I decided it was time to do a little experiment — to do a little unplugging and get back to the basics of life. This is where the ReadyU Conquer This List came in. It was time to conquer #7 UnPlug! It was time to go media-free for 24 hours. Yup, you heard me right. This means no TV, no phone, no laptop, nothing! I know it’s hard to live without these things during the work week, so I suggest (if you’re actually going to brave this task, like I did) do it over the weekend.
After I had turned off my phone and computer, I was kind of at a loss as to how I was going to contact anyone to hang out during my “unplug” day! So instead, I just showed up at my boyfriend’s house; we decided since it was such a gorgeous day outside, to go on a run and then walk around the downtown area near his home. We walked, shopped for CoverGirl® make-up, ate, and then relaxed in his pool after dinner! (Thankfully, I had been so bored earlier in the day with no phone that I had decided to shave my legs with my new Gillette® Venus® razor!). All in all, we had a really nice time — maybe this was because (being the gem he is) he also decided to participate in my “unplug” day. We really had a chance to just talk and focus on each other before it was time to hit the hay, brush our teeth with Crest® toothpaste and turn in for the night.
24 hours without technology can be tough. There were a few times where I felt really disconnected from the world, but let me be clear – there is something really refreshing about being a little out of touch. Just by observing, listening, and being in the moment, I felt a lot more at peace with myself. Being unplugged allows you the opportunity to try something new, get back in touch with who you are, and realize that maybe you don’t need all that electronic stuff as much as you think you do! Thanks to the ReadyU Conquer This List, I learned just that.
