I am not hugely into cartoons besides old episodes of The Simpsons and X-Men so when one of my friend’s kept telling me about how good Bob’s Burgers (available on Netflix and Hulu, guys!) was, I was not stoked nor excited. After a few episodes I was over South Park and Family Guy, I just don’t have much patience for the formulas of most funny cartoons. It’s just not for me, I don’t smoke enough pot, I guess. However, one day while at my buddy’s place, she and her BF insisted I watch Bob’s Burgers. I can watch anything with good company, so I shrugged my shoulders and watched. It was totally not what I had expected from a cartoon.
It’s hard to explain but it’s a different kind of cartoon, it’s not satire but it’s very clever, sharp and witty. It’s not cheesy but it is very much about a family that loves each other. It’s not about popular culture but it will keep you on your toes.
You just must watch because one character stood out to me above them all: Tina Belcher. Tina is a thirteen-year-old girl going through puberty and experiencing all the bodily changes that come with that. She is angsty, “sensual,” and obsessed with boys and their butts. She is clearly voiced by a dude which just brings her pangs for sexual satisfaction to next level humor. Tina is your spirit animal. She is the spirit animal of us all. She is the lover of butts. The writer of zombie erotic fiction. The girl who coined the term, “Don’t have a crap attack.” She is every-woman. She is us all.
