So, I was scrolling through my Twitter for interesting news as I often do. I saw this tweet-joke about a school shooting by The Onion and admittedly cringed a bit. I should mention I was not at all phased by the Quvenzhane Wallis incident but this caught me off guard. All of the responses were telling The Onion that they’ve crossed a line. The past year has been one filled with disgusting violence while gun control remains a hot topic.
Furthermore, the 24-hour news cycles that replay the same images of children, students and citizens running from violence and police hunting these maniacal perpetrators does exactly what these murderers want: make them famous, make mass murder trendy and popular, make them events so that other people like them will also become celebrated when they commit atrocious acts of violence.
The tweet, although satirical, illustrates the disgusting state of our culture where such a joke can even be made. It’s not just a reminder of what has happened in our country’s recent memory but it reminds us of the foreboding threat that another incident like it can occur. The Onion is satire, I accept that but this tweet was particularly disturbing to me.
