Ben Stiller is adapting Reality Bites, the quintessential twenty-something ’90s film, into a sitcom for NBC. This sounds like an interesting idea. The movie was sort of weird because Winona Ryder had to choose between Ben Stiller, a yuppie who actually liked her and Ethan Hawke, a more attractive poet who treated her like shit and she chose Ethan Hawke because he had better hair of course, so that was weird. Besides that the movie was about being a recent college grad and feeling angsty and uncertain about what the future holds.
According to Gawker, “Much like the original, the series will reportedly take place in the early ’90s and center on novice filmmaker Pierce and her slacker friends in Houston after their college graduation. While no casting was announced, it’s safe to say Winona Ryder, Ethan Hawke, Ben Stiller, and the rest of the original cast, which also included Janeane Garofalo and Steve Zahn, will probably not be reprising their roles.”
It would be interesting to see a show that takes place in the ’90s without being too on the nose with nostalgia. I’m curious to see how this turns out.
