Science Says Women Slut-Shame Each Other, Creates Bitchiness Scale

A study found that not only do women slut-shame each other they do it passive aggressively. Millennial women, 86 of them between the ages 20-25, were taken to an Ontario lab at McMaster University and paired with either a stranger or a friend. One half of the women were introduced to a female in “conservative” clothing (pants and a shirt) while the others were introduced to a “sexy” woman wearing  a low-cut blouse, a short black skirt and boots.

Tracy Vaillancourt, a psychology professor at the University of Ottawa, and her research assistant, Aanchal Sharma then gauged each women’s response to the “sexy” or “conservative” woman on a bitchiness scale. The two researchers looked for signs, “like eye-rolling, looking the confederate up or down, or laughing sarcastically.”

One woman exclaimed out loud at the sexy professor, “What the fuck is that?!” She received a 10 out of 10 on the bitchiness scale. But seriously, wtf, she receives a 10 out of 10 on my bitchy scale too!

The study found that, “The women were far more likely to be bitchy to the sexy confederate and their bitchy reactions were more pronounced when the participants were with friends, rather than strangers.”

Vaillancourt conducted another study using only photos of the sexy and conservative women. The participants were given four options and one question: Would you introduce this woman to your boyfriend? Then they were shown a thin and heavier version of both the sexy woman and the conservative woman. Nearly all of the participants said they would not introduce the sexy woman to their boyfriend regardless of whether she was thin or heavier.

This showed that, “Women are threatened by, disapprove of, and punish women who appear and/or act promiscuous.” The behavior in the study can be categorized as “indirect aggression,” or aggressive behavior that you hope doesn’t get detected or that you can cover up with by saying you’re joking.

I have to say, I am pretty disappointed with the way the women behaved in this study. I might even be more disappointed that two female scientist resorted to calling female behavior”bitchy” in the first place. Seriously, come on? The study portrays women as bitchy, mean girls who gossip and behave maliciously behind each other’s backs. What’s even worse is that it shows how corrupted our own perceptions of fellow women are and how they have been shaped by archaic ideas about female sexuality, dress and behavior.

It is 2013 we seriously have to stop behaving like we’re all competing with each other and like there is anything wrong with wearing a short skirt! We all have to break through the SAME glass ceiling so hurting each other isn’t going to get us ANYWHERE.
