6 Things I Bet You Didn’t Know About Your Vagina

I thought I knew my body pretty damn well. After being in it for 24 years, I should be an expert right? Especially when it comes to the lady bits. I thought I knew all about my vajayjay inside and out, but boy was I wrong. We all know quite a bit about our lady bits, but I bet there are a few facts on this list that you didn’t know until now!

1. They vary in size

Okay, okay I know what you’re saying. You know this already and I do too! The average vagina when unaroused has a length of 2.5 to 3 inches wide and 3.5 inches long. We all know our vagina has to expand for certain activities like childbirth and sex, but did you know it can expand up to 200%? Yes, 200%. Pretty damn impressive if you ask me!

2. You won’t have to braid your pubes

Eww what?! Sorry a little TMI, I know. But it’s true! Your pubic hair only has a life expectancy of about 3 weeks (compared to the hair on your head at 7 years). The short life expectancy means it’ll only grow to a certain length. So whether you groom or not down south, you’ll never have to sport a side pony down there.

3. Sharks

Your vaginal lubricant contains an organic compound called squalene. You know what else squalene is found in? Shark oil.  Is anyone else thinking about Jaws? Or that movie Teeth?! Google it now.

4. Heal master

One of the fastest healing parts of your body is…you guessed it, your vagina! The cells in your vagina are replaced quite rapidly –rips and tears can heal in about 48 hours. Your vagina has a super rich blood supply that promotes healing at rapidly, even after giving birth. Voila! Magic.

5. Your vagina can fall out

Sounds like a nightmare, but it can happen. It’s called pelvic organ prolapse. Pelvic organ prolapse is caused by a few things, childbirth being the biggest culprit. Certain muscles hold up your pelvic organs, and during childbirth they can stretch and weaken. If they don’t recover, your organs don’t have support. Most women say it feels like something is hanging out of their vagina. Don’t worry too much though, there is good news: it can be easily fixed!

6. Clitoris > Penis

Sorry boys, but we win. The tip of your clitoris has about twice as many nerve endings as the head of a penis. The head of the penis has about 3000 nerve endings, whereas the clitoris has between 6000 and 8000. So if you’re wondering why so many women need clitoral stimulation to orgasm, you’ve got your answer. Oh, and the clitoris is the only human organ that is made purely for sexual pleasure. Boom.
