We’re not sure about you, but our skin goes absolutely berserk this time of year. Cold winter air makes our skin red, itchy, dry and flaky – not a good look. At all. Sure there are a ton of creams out there that claim to get the job done, but sometimes we’re so overwhelmed by choices, we don’t know where to turn. Not to mention, most of the time the best remedies for our skincare ailments don’t involve fancy formulas that cost an arm and a leg.

We found four natural ways to treat dry winter skin that are good for both your health and budget.

Coconut Oil - Perhaps our favorite of the natural dry skin remedies, coconut oil is a true superfood for your body. Use it liberally from your neck to your toes, and you will see noticeably softer skin in a week’s time. Use it in your hair to prevent flyways for beauty bonus points.

humidifier

Humidifier - If the air is dry and cold outside, it’s bound to feel the same in your home, especially if you have steam heat. The best way to fill the air of your apartment or dorm room with moisture is to invest in a humidifier. Don’t have the time or money to shop? Place some bowls of water around your home. The liquid will slowly evaporate, adding moisture to the air.

Lukewarm Showers - We know you probably don’t want to hear this, but hot water is one of the worst offenders of dry skin because it draws out natural oils. Rather than taking a scalding hot shower, try using lukewarm water instead. Trust us, your skin will thank you after.

bragg's apple cider vinegar

Apple Cider Vinegar - We can’t forget about the scalp in this dry winter weather because those unsightly flakes are so not welcome on the shoulder of a little black dress. Not only does apple cider vinegar clarify the hair, making it lightweight and shiny by getting out leftover product grime, it is a great weapon in the fight against scalp dryness. Once a week, rinse your hair with 1/2 cup before washing and conditioning.
