The ICONIC list. That is what I have deemed it. Here’s the thing about Pepsi ads, they usually premiere around or on the night of the Super Bowl and they are usually iconic. I don’t drink soda but when I did I drank Coca Cola. Yet, Pepsi advertisements will always stand out to me as memorable and important. Why? They just had better celebrity endorsements: pop stars—no divas. Some of the most memorable Pepsi ads feature the strongest and most famous women of that pop culture moment and no, they weren’t objectified. The women were usually doing their thing. From Cindy Crawford getting shaded by a new Pepsi can (Yes, that happened) to Beyonce going full throttle against other Beyonces. The undertones were always about female empowerment, cleverness or a subversion of expectations. They were just good ads. They never convinced me to drink Pepsi but they convinced me to like pop music.
Now of course not all of these advertisements feature women and if Michael Jackson getting his hair set on fire is only #4 then you better brace yourself for #1.
