In really sad and horrible news, an open letter was written to The New York Times from Dylan Farrow, the adopted daughter of famed Hollywood film director, Woody Allen and his ex-girlfriend Mia Farrow. The letter goes into detail about the horrid sexual experiences she had with her adoptive father. Farrow writes about specific times when Allen would make her play with toys while he touched her inappropriately while making her promise to keep it their little secret.
In her letter, she writes, “What’s your favorite Woody Allen movie? Before you answer, you should know: when I was seven years old, Woody Allen took me by the hand and led me into a dim, closet-like attic on the second floor of our house. He told me to lay on my stomach and play with my brother’s electric train set. Then he sexually assaulted me. He talked to me while he did it, whispering that I was a good girl, that this was our secret, promising that we’d go to Paris and I’d be a star in his movies. I remember staring at that toy train, focusing on it as it traveled in its circle around the attic. To this day, I find it difficult to look at toy trains.”
Anytime a victim of sexual abuse speaks out, there is always that twinge of sadness and pain but also pride and encouragement because it takes a lot of courage to come out and speak about being sexually abused as a child. NYT columnist Nicholas Kristof wanted readers to read her letter with an open mind. This was just one woman’s testimony–one woman’s story and it isn’t fair to throw stones at Allen just yet. He was never prosecuted in this case and denies all the allegations against him. He’s innocent until proven guilty.
Dylan writes about how Allen’s god-like presence in Hollywood is the epitome of what is wrong with sexual abuse cases today. She calls out specific actors like Emma Stone and Louis C.K., who stand by the man who she accuses of being the cause of her eating disorder and self-mutilation problems. She also writes about how she’s at peace now. She refuses to let Allen’s popularity be a trigger for her anymore.
Farrow is happy and healthy and married with children, and we wish her the best.
