The first trailer for The Giver is out and it looks excellent. The Giver is the one required reading book almost universally loved by fifth and sixth graders in America. The award winning novel was written by Lois Lowry who was doing YA science fiction before The Hunger Games, Divergent and the other cheap imitations came along. Even if this movie is bad it won’t even matter because Meryl Streep is in it and she never gives a bad performance. She never really picks bad roles either—I am stoked. The film features a star studded cast including Jeff Bridges, Katie Holmes, Alexander Skarsgard and unfortunately a raven haired Taylor Swift. If you’ve seen her previous acting credits on CSI, you’d be less enthused too. Brenton Thwaites and Odeya Rush will star as Jonas and Fiona respectively.
To refresh your memory the book synopsis is: “Set in a society which is at first presented as a utopian society and gradually appears more and more dystopian. The novel follows a boy named Jonas through the twelfth year of his life. The society has eliminated pain and strife by converting to ‘Sameness,’ a plan that has also eradicated emotional depth from their lives. Jonas is selected to inherit the position of ‘Receiver of Memory,’ the person who stores all the past memories of the time before Sameness, in case they are ever needed to aid in decisions that others lack the experience to make.”
