Now, obviously, by now you and the 7 billion other people on the planet know that something happened on Game of Thrones last night. Hell, it’s trending on Facebook. Something very important happened. Something very significant happened less than 24 hours of a TV show. Whether or not you watch Game of Thrones doesn’t matter because surely your social media news feeds were filled with nods, winks and explicit GIFs of “The Purple Wedding.”
Whhhhhhhhhhhy? There is nothing more agitating than having a critical moment from a TV show spoiled (for me) at least. Look, I have to give props where props are due. The people who have read the series knew that this important thing was going to pop off and they managed to keep a lid on it for years. Yet, the people who watched the show couldn’t wait 10 minutes.
In the ’60s all of America would gather round the tube and watch the exact same thing because there weren’t really any other options. If you missed a show when it aired then that was on you because you only had one chance to see it anyway. Today things are different some people have cable, some people have DVRs and some people, broke ass millennials like myself, stream things online because cable is too expensive, whether that’s illegal or sharing an HBO GO/Hulu/Netflix account, it’s what we do.
The point is, as a culture we simply do not all watch things at the same time. This is a fact. It’s obnoxious to presume, in a world where both cable and time, are a luxury that we’re all going to watch a series when it first airs. I am not saying no one should ever talk about their favorite show or write about it or tweet about it, I am just saying let’s be a little more thoughtful. Let’s give each other 24 hours to catch up. Honestly, I can avoid a headline, I can avoid a link, but I cannot avoid GIFs.
Stop posting spoiler GIFs the minute something happens just because you want your stupid post to have a ton of likes. I KNOW I SOUND CRAZY RIGHT NOW BUT MY CARROTS ARE STEAMED. IT’S REALLY JUST THE SPOILER GIFS. THEY GOT ME FOR THE RED WEDDING. THEY GOT ME WITH THIS PURPLE WEDDING. CAN I JUST BE SURPRISED WHEN SOMEONE DIES?
Can we just stop ruining things??? At least Game of Thrones things? Pwetty please?
