Last weekend, in Ferguson, Mo., a police officer shot and killed a black boy by the name of Michael Brown. The original reports of the incident state that Brown was unarmed and suffered multiple gun shot wounds. This story might change now that the police in Missouri have released the name of the officer that killed Brown.

This incident sparked a week of riots, peaceful protests, the wrongful imprisonment of citizens, journalists getting arrested and tear gas. Ferguson Mo. is a war zone.

We know this isn’t the typical back to school advice or pictures of cats we push out daily but we want our readers to be smart and informed too. At CollegeCandy we talk about being a strong woman all the time, and part of that comes with knowing what’s going on in the world.

I am by no means an expert on what’s happening in Missouri, however, these people are first hand accounts and credible news sources. So if you’re at all interested in following what’s happening in Missouri, I would check these people out.

Trymaine Lee: a Pulitzer prize winning reporter for MSNBC who used to write for the Huffington Post and the New York Times.

Wesley Lowery: a journalist for the Washington Post that was arrested in a McDonald’s. He live tweeted his whole arrest and took video.

Ryan Reilly: another journalist who was arrested with Wesley. Ryan writes for the Huffington Post.

Christopher Hayes: a journalist for MSNBC

Yamiche Alcindor: a breaking news reporter for USA Today.

Antonio French: citizen journalist from Missouri who was arrested Wednesday night but released. He’s been the eyes and ears of the city.
