ICYMI: There was a mass violation of female celebrities’ rights over the weekend that resulted in a ton of women’s nude photos being leaked on Reddit and 4Chan forums. These victims included Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Upton, Avril Lavigne, Ariane Grande and many more. I have a lot to say about the reactions to this situation but I’ll keep it short and sweet.
To those saying, “If you don’t want nude photos leaked, don’t keep them on your phone,” I will say: If you don’t want your house burglarized don’t keep valuable things inside of it. If you don’t want to trip, don’t walk. If you don’t want to get raped, don’t wear a short skirt. If you don’t want a cop to stop you, don’t wear baggy pants and a hoodie. If you don’t want your diamonds stolen, don’t keep them in a vault concealed behind a painting. If you don’t want cancer, don’t live in a post-industrialized civilization riddled with air pollution, toxins and a depleting ozone layer.
We should not live in a society where we should expect our rights to be violated. And even if we live in a society where we can expect that certain groups will be victimized because that society is tolerant of injustice, we should not be complacent in it.
We should not have to live our lives in constant fear that perpetrators will abuse their power and hurt us. We should not live in a society where victims are blamed for the actions of violators.
I’ve always loved Jennifer Lawrence and I don’t love her any less today.
