Solange’s New Album Is a Work of Art

Let’s get one thing straight: Solange is not Beyonce. This does not make her better or worse. Her latest album A Seat at the Table is the perfect proof of Solange’s unique artistry and incredible talent, a display of her very own lane. A Seat at the Table is a timely work of art, and it’s her follow-up to 2012’s indie-tinged success True.

A Seat at the Table covers some pretty heavy themes. One of the most important elements of the album is its evaluation and celebration of blackness, with a particularly powerful and emotional interlude courtesy of Miss Tina, Tina Knowles, the mother of Solange and Beyonce. The album discusses the black experience heavily. Solange also explores sadness, depression, coping and does all of this with major soul and funk influences. The album is a perfect culmination of the sentiments behind Solange’s previous works, True and her older album Sol Angel & The Hadley Street Dreams.
