Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are on their way to divorce, but before things are finalized, the couple’s former bodyguard Mark Billingham is sharing very personal details about their marriage. Billingham says that along with “basically” fathering their children, he had to keep a close eye on them because Brangelina’s biggest fear was that they would be kidnapped and held for ransom.
The decorated former British Army soldier from Walsall spent nearly 18 months as head of security for the couple and their six children. In a recent interview with The Sun, Billingham revealed the extreme measures he went to ensure that the family was safe.
“The biggest concern for them was the kidnapping of the kids, it’s all about money,” he said, before clarifying that the couple really trusted him with their six children. “[I] could take the kids anywhere I wanted to on my own.” He says that he spent so much time around them that he “fathered them, basically.”
He also revealed that Pitt and Jolie were extremely hesitant to let anyone else go near their kids. “Even when I wanted to bring in extra people, they wouldn’t let any of those near the kids,” he said. The additional guards “could look out for them from a distance but they couldn’t physically touch them.”
But it wasn’t just the kids that needed to look after, it was also Brangelina, especially Brad Pitt. “People love her but hate him,” he said. “You have to figure out a way of protecting them from all that. It was challenging, but interesting.”
He continued, “What surprised me was their low level of common sense. I found it crazy when they would ask me questions like, ‘How do I go down to that bar?’ and ‘What do I need to do to get there?’ They’re not stupid, but because of the world they live in they just haven’t done something like that for so long. I found that weird.”
He eventually quit, saying that he “lost direction in [his] own family life” and that he “never had a private life.” Throughout the entire time he worked there, he was only home for six weeks. “It was just too full-on,” he explained. However, he manages to stay in touch with both stars separately, and has even helped them out with special events.
“It’s mostly word of mouth. I’ll get a call from Angie,” he explained to New York Times journalist Ben Machell in a separate article. “She’ll say, ‘Hey Billy, I’ve got this thing in Baghdad. Can you come and help me out?’ “Yeah, no problem at all. I’ll fly out to Jordan, meet her and the kids there, then take her to meet the UN. Just sort her out.”
He also shared moments from when the couple was happier, particularly a gross yet hilarious birthday memory that proves there were better times.
“It was Angie’s birthday and we were all sitting in a frigging Audi Q7,” he said. “I hadn’t been working with them long and suddenly Brad has locked the doors and farted and we couldn’t get out. He won’t have a problem with me telling you.”
If only things didn’t end up this way.
