Jonnu Smith’s 2016 football season and college ball career have come to an end after a domestic dispute with his pregnant girlfriend, Mary Gaspar.
The Florida International University tight end suffered severe burns to his head, neck, back, shoulder, and an arm. Gaspar, five months pregnant with Smith’s child, dumped a pot of boiling water on the football player in his dorm room on Halloween.
She was charged with aggravated battery and was released on a pre-trial release order. Gaspar told police that she and Smith were arguing about their relationship throughout the day of the incident, causing her to feel “extremely emotional and stressed.” She was unsatisfied with the amount of attention her boyfriend was giving her in their relationship. This is what she says caused her to boil a pot of water in Smith’s dorm room and pour it onto him,
When Smith didn’t have the extreme reaction to the scalding water that she wanted, she began slapping him. The extent of Smith’s damage isn’t certain, but he won’t play another game for the Panthers this season. According to the Miami Herald, Smith was the team’s premier offensive player over his four seasons, and the Panthers’ best prospect for the 2017 NFL Draft.
