A newborn baby was abducted from her mother, 27-year-old Laura Abarca-Nogueda, last Thursday in a horrific set of crimes. People reports that Abarca-Nogueda, who was living in Wichita, Kansas with her boyfriend, was shot and killed in her home by a kidnapper who then stole her 6-day-old daughter. However, the infant, Sophia Gonzales, was found unharmed on Saturday morning all the way in Dallas, Texas.
She was found in the home of Yesenia Sesmas, 34, who is being accused of Abarca-Nogueda’s murder, kidnapping and allegedly faking her own pregnancy for months. According to Wichita police, Sesmas was arrested on Saturday after a successful two-day search for baby Gonzales. Wichita police Lt. Todd Ojile explained the baby was discovered in Sesmas’ Dallas home, where her boyfriend, son and niece were also staying.
As if it wasn’t bad enough, Ojile said that Sesmas and Abarca-Nogueda had known each other for a long time before the murder took place. Sesmas also reportedly lived in Wichita earlier this year before moving to Texas. She was immediately taken into custody and is now being held on charges for kidnapping and first-degree murder, Ojile reported. The exact motives for Sesmas’ supposed crimes aren’t clear, but it appears that she was attempting to pass off Abarca-Nogueda’s child as her own.
Meanwhile, Abarca-Nogueda’s daughter was returned to her father. Although the baby is unharmed, she no longer has her mother. A GoFundMe page was set up in Abarca-Nogueda’s tribute to raise money for her funeral. Though the baby’s father and Abarca-Nogueda’s family are thankful for Sophia’s safe return, they are still mourning the horrible loss they suffered.
