Amy Schumer will apparently be starring as one of our all-time favorite childhood toys. The star is playing Barbie herself in a live-action Barbie movie, produced by Sony. Though the popular toy has had plenty of backlash about promoting unrealistic expectations about beauty, Schumer is here to remedy that.
According to Deadline, the movie’s premise revolves around an imperfect Barbie, who lives in “Barbieland” with 180+ other women, but doesn’t quite fit in. She then gets kicked out for not being perfect enough, finding herself stuck in the real world, which sounds similar to Enchanted. Barbie’s adventures eventually teach her that loving yourself comes from within and true perfection is absolute nonsense. She ultimately returns to Barbieland with this information just in time to save it from some unknown evil.
The Barbie movie has been in development since early 2014, when Sony and toy company Mattel made the initial deal. According to Cosmopolitan, Schumer and her sister, Kim Caramele, are apparently planning to rewrite the movie’s script from an original draft created by Hilary Winston, who’s worked on TV shows like Community and My Name is Earl. The film’s production will begin in the spring, tentatively releasing sometime in summer 2018.
