Chris Pratt stumbled into showbiz in such a low-key way, it might actually make you angry. Ranked one of the Sexiest Men Alive by People, the 37-year-old Minnesota native starred in some of the biggest blockbusters in America. Leading the pack of misfits in Guardians of the Galaxy, Pratt soon skyrocketed to fame playing the dino-fighting hero in Jurassic World. No one would have guessed America’s favorite action hero landed his first role while waiting tables in Hawaii. Homeless.
Well, he had a tent. And weed.
Chris Pratt Net Worth as of 2016: $30 Million
2000 – 2010
Born in Minnesota and raised in a working-class family, Chris Pratt dropped out of community college in his late teens. When his high school wrestling coach asked what he wanted to be when he grew up, Pratt said, “I don’t know, but I know I’ll be famous and I know I’ll make a shit ton of money.” Recalling that time, the now grown-up Pratt says, “I had no idea how. I’d done nothing proactive.”
While waiting tables in Maui, actress and director Rae Dawn Chong walked in and 19-year-old Pratt did the most proactive thing in his life.
”I was like, ‘You’re in the movies, right? I always wanted to be in the movies,”’ he told Entertainment Weekly. “She said, ‘You’re cute. Do you act?’ I was like f**k it, ‘Goddamn right I act! Put me in a movie!”’
Believe it or not, Chong cast Pratt in her directorial debut, the short horror film Cursed Part 3, which was never released. But he stayed in Hollywood and slowly made his way to the top.
2011 – 2013
After almost a decade of playing second fiddle, Pratt got the audition of his life, Avatar. He read for the leading man, Jake Sully. But things didn’t go well. Coming out of the audition, Pratt said, “They said they want somebody that has ‘that thing’, that ‘it factor.’ I walked into that room knowing that I did not have that thing, and I walked out thinking I would never have that thing, probably.” Resolved to make something of his career, Pratt said, “People have to work. I just don’t want it to be at a fucking restaurant.”
Not eager to have another Avatar moment, Pratt turned down the opportunity to play Peter Quill/Star-Lord in Guardians of the Galaxy in 2013. But the casting director insisted that Pratt meet the director, James Gunn. And when the duo finally did meet, it was, as they say in the movies, “love at first sight.” Pratt’s big break had come at last.
Cashing in on his break, it’s time for a home upgrade. Pratt traded in his $2.3 million Hollywood Hills home for a $3.3 million, 4,700-square-foot house in L.A.
“Anna once told me that if I moved her into a trailer, she would still be happy,” Pratt said to People in 2014. “And I said, ‘Well, honey, there’s a good chance I’m going to do that, so…’”
2014 – 2016
In November 2013, Chris Pratt replaced Josh Bolinas as the leading man in Jurassic World. The movie grossed $1.6 billion worldwide. Forbes estimated the dinosaur-fighting hero banked $13 million between 2014 to 2015.
Pratt’s next film was the remake of the 1960s Western The Magnificent Seven. In December 2016, we will see Pratt star alongside Jennifer Lawrence in the science fiction film Passengers. He’s playing a mechanic trying to escape Earth, where “a guy who works with his hands is no longer valued.”
With a couple of blockbusters under his belt, the sequels alone will keep the action hero busy for a while. Pratt will star as Peter Quill / Star-Lord in the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 in May 2017. He will also portray the character in Avengers: Infinity War in May 2018.
