Having a disease that causes you to lose weight like crazy? It’s not as fun as you might think.

Gigi Hadid, AKA supermodel extraordinaire, opened up to Elle about a disease she’s been quietly coping with for several years.

She revealed,

“My metabolism actually changed like crazy this year. I have Hashimoto’s disease. It’s a thyroid disease, and it’s now been two years since taking the medication for it.”

The autoimmune disease can slows down your metabolism and can cause weight gain, fatigue and depression. However, the hormones it’s treated with can cause weight loss as a side effect. Unfortunately for Gigi, that’s not what she was looking for.

The 21-year-old model said,

“For the VS show I didn’t want to lose any more weight, I just want to have muscles in the right place, and if my butt can get a little perkier, then that’s good.”

Gina Rodriguez, Zoe Saldana and Victoria Justice also deal with this thyroid disease, so it’s not as uncommon as you might think.

Gigi says she combats the weight loss side effects by constantly hitting the gym to keep up her muscle mass. There’s also the random moments were she gets a few squats in.

“I put a sticky note in my kitchen that just said ‘squats’ and every time I walked passed the squat sticky note I had to do 15 squats. It’s a good trick because you have to have integrity with yourself. No one else is watching, but you’re like, ‘Okay, I have to do this for myself,’ which is important.”
