Being single over the holiday season can suck. You have no one to take to your boss’ Christmas party or cuddle with or wear matching ugly sweaters with or any of that annoying cute holiday couple-y stuff. But instead of pouting about it, this girl shows off her sense of humor by sending out the most bitter holiday cards we’ve ever seen.
Bridget McCartney, 29, says the cards started after her four siblings were all married by 2009, and she was the only single one left in the family, she told Buzzfeed in an interview. They were sending out their own holiday cards with their spouses and children; McCartney was still doing one with her parents. The following year, her parents decided to send out a holiday card without her in it. That’s when McCartney found sudden inspiration.
“Acting as the youngest child, I threw a fit and decided to do my own to get back at all of them,” she said in the interview. So she decided to send out her own, lonely Christmas cards. In doing so, McCartney became the role model for single, bitter women everywhere.
Of course, the first card was a surprise. “I created the first card without telling anyone and sent it to all my family members,” McCartney explained. “It ended up being a big hit amongst my family members; my mother wasn’t all too pleased.” Naturally, she decided to do it every year since.
No significant other, no friends – she definitely nails it with the stuffed animals at Christmas dinner.
I mean, at least she enjoys her own company…
The cards get progressively funnier as time goes on. And they’re a real hit with her loved ones. “My friends get so excited every December and can’t wait to see the new card,” McCartney explained. “I even have friends that have all six years hanging on their fridge to display all year long.”
“My family is pretty into it as well. My siblings start badgering me about October asking me what my idea is for this year and giving me ideas that they think I should use. They almost always involve cats,” she added.
Her Christmas cards ended up going viral in 2014, and for good reason, because they’re hilarious.
Copious amounts of alcohol are a prevalent theme, of course.
2016’s picture doesn’t hold back any punches, much like 2016 as a year. While we hope McCartney eventually finds the love of her life that she obviously deserves, we also really want her to keep making holiday cards.
