All “great” artists peak at one point in their careers, and it seems like T-Swift’s time might be up. Her latest single “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever,” featuring Zayn Malik, has dropped from No. 7 to No. 18 in Billboard‘s Hot 100 in its second week of release, and it is her first new song to not hit the top spot in several years. Regardless of her latest publicity stunt (whether genuine or not), her Fifty Shades Darker single hasn’t gained Taylor Swift the attention that her PR Team strives to obtain.
If we’re being honest, 2016 has been a very unforgiving year, but it seems to have hit Swift extremely hard. With the release of her “Wildest Dreams” music video, which the Huffington Post criticized as bringing back white colonialism, Swift has been called out as a racist and a white feminist. But that wasn’t the worst of it all. The event that caused the most backlash to her career was her feud with Kanye West over song lyrics. Unfortunately for her, a clip was released where she gave the rapper permission to use her name for his hit single “Famous.”
Several fans turned on her and called her a hypocrite for this feud, and some went as far as creating a trending hashtag, #TaylorSwiftIsOver. Whether Swift heard the full song prior to its release or not, her reputation was marred after she played the innocent victim through social media.
Many still believe Swift will make a comeback (as all record breaking artists tend to do), but with her seemingly poor performance of “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever,” 2017 may not be her revival year. Honestly, Swift needs some time to shake off the bad publicity because it has clearly impacted her career.
