Online tutorials have been transforming the makeup world, making tons of products and techniques available for everyone. You can find a makeup tutorial for just about any occasion by simply searching Youtube! As a result, many makeup artists have gained popularity through social media for their talents with a makeup brush.
But one of the problems of following these MUAs on Instagram or Youtube is that they often use expensive products in their videos. While their careers make it so that having higher-end brands is a necessity – and they often get sponsored – it’s not as feasible for the rest of us. Buying $50 palettes doesn’t exactly fit into a college student’s budget!
But luckily, many of these Instafamous MUAs also reveal their favorite drugstore makeup. CosmobyHaley, KathleenLights, Jaclyn Hill, Manny MUA, Destiny Lashae, RachhLoves, Jeffree Star, Roxette Arisa and ReadySetGlamour all have videos going over some of their tried-and-true products. We’ve done our research and found that some of the most popular artists agree that some makeup items are universally amazing.
Here are the products that have been deemed the best drugstore makeup around:
Primer & Foundation
One of the most popular primers mentioned was the L’Oreal Magic Lumi Light Infusing Primer. It gives a luminosity that most primers don’t have, making your face look extra hydrated. This primer also keeps your makeup on for a loooong time, according to the reviews. A close second was NYX Angel Veil Primer, which provides a light but effective base for foundation.
In terms of foundation, many agreed that L’Oreal Infallible Matte Foundation was incredible for giving the user smooth, flawless skin! Their skincare line was brought up a lot with different formulas, but the Infallible Matte Foundation was noted most often. It doesn’t apply too cakey or heavy, nor does it emphasizes creases like some foundations end up doing. Some makeup artists recommended Milani Conceal and Perfect Foundation as well, noting that it is cruelty-free and lasts all day.
Looking for a good concealer? Maybelline Fit Me Concealer was by far the most popular one showcased in these drugstore makeup reviews. It doesn’t feel heavy-duty but effectively covers dark circles and imperfections like a dream. The Fit Me Foundation was also mentioned as great for medium-to-heavy coverage, but the concealer was definitely the more popular product.
Blush & Bronzer
The Milani Baked Blush in “Luminoso” is definitely a favorite among prominent makeup artists. It has a really pretty glow that works with many different skin types. The e.l.f. Blush Palettes in various shades are also praised for their intense pigmentation and smooth application.
The absolute most popular product we found was the Physician’s Formula Butter Bronzer. Everyone – and we mean everyone – we researched commented on how soft and easy to use the bronzer was, how good it smelled and how easy it blended in with the skin. The Physician’s Formula line has been around for some time, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t better than some newer products!
Again, the Physician’s Formula line wins here too – this time with their Shimmer Strips in “Warm Nude”. What beauty bloggers seem to love about this is how it comes in many shades in the same package, giving more of a textured glow rather than just a one-dimensional color. The multi-colored strips make it so that it’s compatible for many different skin shades!
Two other highlighters that were mentioned are the Wet N’ Wild “Precious Petals” MegaGlo and the L’Oreal Lumi Liquid Glow Illuminator. The Wet N’ Wild highlighter won’t make you look like a disco ball with its more subtle application and is a whopping $4 at Walgreens. The L’Oreal Illuminator is a liquid highlighter rather than a powder one and is so efficient that you only need a tiny amount to get an intense glow.
Many makeup artists have said that drugstore eyeshadow tends to be chalky or hard to work with, but they agree that L’Oreal Infallible Shadows are the best you can find. They’re almost creamy, making it very easy to apply, and the pigmentation is intense so you don’t have to redo it throughout the day. The color “Amber Rush” is by far the most popular, seeing as the rose-gold trend is continuing on into 2017. e.l.f. Eyeshadow Palettes have also been complimented for their inexpensive but efficient shadows.
When it comes to black eyeliner, it seems that everyone had a different opinion when it comes to drugstore products. But there was one item that more than one makeup artist liked the best, and that’s the Maybelline Gel Liner. It goes on very smoothly and the color won’t fade throughout the day!
But the pinnacle of eye makeup is good lashes, and L’Oreal Voluminous Carbon Black Mascara is what will complete your look. Unlike many other mascaras, the wand isn’t too giant, which will prevent your lashes from looking too clumpy. But you’ll still get the volume and length you want without even needing fake lashes.
If you love a good lippie then you definitely have some options. Many of the makeup artists listed at least two or three different kinds as their absolute favorites from the drugstore, so you know these will work well. For lining your lips, both the NYX Lip Liners and Milani Lip Liners will do the trick without bleeding into the skin around your mouth. NYX is a little less expensive, but Milani’s colors are so lush; it’s all a matter of preference.
The Maybelline Color Sensational Lipsticks were hailed for their intense pigmentation by those makeup artists who adore lots of bright colors. The brand’s Creamy Matte Lipsticks are also notable, as they apply very nicely without drying out the lips, giving them a more hydrated look and feel. Other artists complimented Milani’s Matte Lipsticks for their long-staying power throughout the day.
More of a gloss lover? Use the NYX Butter Glosses for a pigmented and fun look without breaking the bank.
A makeup artist is only as good as their tools, and there are some pretty good products you can pick up at your local RiteAid. e.l.f. Makeup Brushes were deemed as the best, especially with their low prices – one MUA even compared it to the Sephora brushes but at a fraction of the price. They are very soft and come in a huge variety to fit all your makeup needs.
When you want to take off your face at the end of the day, use the Ponds Evening Soothe Makeup Wipes for a gentle clean. If you prefer unscented, Simple Cleansing Makeup Wipes are also effective but won’t irritate sensitive skin.
