Birthdays, anniversaries, Valentine’s Day… All of these holidays have three major things in common.

1. They all require presents.

2. They all sneak up on you.

3. They are all important to your girlfriend.

Knowing each of these things, it can be tough to figure out exactly how to make that big day special. So that’s when you scramble to think of the perfect gift, and while it may eventually work out on the rare days you happen to have Lady Luck on your side, there are always days you fall short.

Those days are back and Valentine’s Day is just a few weeks away. So for all of you boys trying to please that special girl in your life, here’s a list of five gifts that are sure to blow her away. You’re welcome.

1. Make a collage.

What you’ll need: Posterboard, glue stick, old ticket stubs, photos, pieces of menus, or anything else significant in your relationship with your girlfriend.

What to do: This idea only works if you’re the type to save ticket stubs to movies you saw together or grab paper menus from restaurants the two of you love. Perhaps you should start collecting this stuff now so you can implement your idea for the next special occasion. This is an especially good idea for anniversaries.

Start by making sure you have lots of photos and other items that mean something to your girlfriend in your relationship. This can be anything: screenshots of sweet texts, a nice note she gave you one day, etc. It’s all important. Glue or tape them all onto a poster board in a collage style like you used to do in art class.

It’s a very sweet gift that will show how much you love her and it barely requires any spending on your part. Ever heard “it’s the thought that counts”? Well, this thought could move her to tears!

2. Create a personalized phone case.

valentines-day

What you’ll need: Access to a website that makes personalized phone cases like Casemate or Castify and knowledge of what your girlfriend loves (and what kind of phone she has).

What to do: While this might seem like a simple gift, personalizing the case shows your girlfriend how well you know her, and we all just want someone who knows us. To get the most out of this gift, rather than just putting one picture on the case, put in multiple. If she’s a fan of Harry Potter, Paramore and Christmas, use pictures of the Hogwarts Crest, Hayley Williams and the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree.

It’ll be something she’ll love and since she can use it, she’ll think of you and how lucky she is to have you every time she uses her phone (which most likely means she’ll always be thinking of you).

3. Collect date ideas in a mason jar.

What you’ll need: A mason jar (though really, any kind of jar, box, or Tupperware will do), a pair of scissors, printer paper, a marker, a pen and stickers.

What to doThis can be done at any time, though it’s best towards the beginning of a new year. Grab a mason jar, use a marker to write the words ‘Date Night’ somewhere on it and then decorate it with stickers. Cut 52 strips of paper, big enough to be folded at least once. On each strip, write down the name of a place or activity that can be a date, like ‘Olive Garden’ or ‘roller skating.’ Fold each strip and put it into the jar. Here’s the idea: There are 52 weeks in a year. You and your girlfriend will pick one day each week to make into a date night. The morning of your date, your girlfriend can reach into the jar and pick out one piece of paper at random and whatever she picks is where you’ll go or what you’ll do.

This is a cute gift, plus it’ll tell your girlfriend that you like spending time with her and you want to see her often. This doesn’t mean you guys can’t go out whenever you’re free. It just means you’ll definitely go out once every week. Everyone wants to know that their significant other wants to spend time together, so an reassurance in gift form can only help.

4. Plan the perfect movie night.

valentines

What you’ll need: A basket (without a lid), at least four DVDs, candy, microwavable popcorn, your girlfriend’s favorite soda, a warm and fuzzy throw blanket, a pillow and long, fuzzy socks.

What to do: I’ll admit that this may get kind of expensive, but it’s a fancier and more thoughtful version of the usual Netflix and chill. You’ll buy the DVDs, food, soda, blanket and socks, and put them all into a basket to build the best arsenal of movie night essentials. If your girlfriend doesn’t eat candy and popcorn or drink soda, make sure to replace those items with her personal faves. The blanket and socks are to keep her cozy in the winter, perfect if you’re giving her this gift for the holidays in December or Valentine’s Day in February. If you’re giving her this gift in warmer months or you’re lucky enough to live somewhere snow never falls, then replace the throw and socks with a nice pillow. A monogrammed pillow will be even sweeter.

The best part of this gift is that it’s something you can enjoy together. You can get her movies that she loves but doesn’t own or DVDs of new releases that she wanted to see but didn’t get to check out. To jazz it up even more, add a theme to your basket. If your girlfriend is a horror fan, get her the scariest movies you can find. If she’s obsessed with Disney movies, there are plenty you can choose from. This will help her enjoy the gift and the night even more.

5. Cook her dinner.

love

What you’ll need: A recipe, access to a kitchen and the ingredients for whatever you want to make.

What to do: For some guys (aka the guys who can actually cook) this may seem easy. For others, the guys who have never cooked or the ones who can figure out a way to burn water, this task may seem daunting. Either way, it’s an amazing gift. Girls just like to know that you care and that you’re willing to put in the work to show them you care. Set the table with candles and flowers and put on some romantic music so that by the time you sit down to eat it almost doesn’t matter what you made.

For those of you that can cook, make your girlfriend’s favorite food and go the extra mile with her favorite dessert. For those of you that can’t cook, it doesn’t have to be anything fancy. Some of the tastiest items are the easiest to make. Spaghetti just requires you to cook noodles in boiling water for about 11 minutes. You can buy the sauce and mix it in when it’s done. If you buy frozen chicken patties and slices of Parmesan cheese, putting cheese covered chicken patties in the oven for a few minutes will give you delicious chicken parm. The meal can even be something as simple as sandwiches. Just add in her favorite vegetables, meats and/or cheese between two slices of bread. You can even buy your girlfriend’s favorite dessert.

Your girlfriend will love that you put in so much effort for a date, making it a present that doubles as a reminder of how much you care about her.
