If there’s one thing we absolutely love about Kesha, it’s her music. We’re thankful to her for blessing us with the greatness that is “Tik Tok,” “Blah Blah Blah” and “Your Love Is My Drug.” She has provided us with some of the greatest party anthems ever.
There was even a (strange) point in time when the world mistakenly thought that Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones was her father. Considering one of her most famous lyrics, “but we kick ’em to the curb unless they look like Mick Jagger,” we were grossed out for a while there… Luckily, this wasn’t true, which is proof that there’s still a lot to be learned about Kesha.
Her personality is as unique as her personality and from the glitter to the ripped stockings, Kesha is not your regular singer. Underneath the glitz and the controversy, there is so still much more to Kesha than many people know. In honor of her birthday, here are seven little-known facts about the life of our girl Kesha.
1. Kesha had a hard time growing up.
As a teenager, Kesha had a hard time making friends. She has said that she rarely fit in and wasn’t often accepted for who she was as a person. Kesha dyed her hair purple and wore velvet pants as a way to express herself but, as teenagers can be, her peers were less than understanding.
2. She once broke into Prince’s house.
Before Kesha made it as a singer, she broke into Prince’s house and left her demo there in the hopes of the legendary singer taking notice of her singing talents. You know what they say about desperate times leading to desperate measures.
3. She’s always loved music.
As a young kid growing up, Kesha got her musical inspirations from listening to music icons like Madonna and Queen. After falling in love with their music, Kesha knew that becoming a singer was what she wanted most in life and would perform as much as she could.
4. She’s super close with her mom.
Kesha got her talents from her mother, Pebe Sebert, who was also a singer and songwriter before having Kesha and her brothers. Pebe was known for co-writing some of Dolly Parton’s greatest hits, including the chart-topping “Old Flames Could Never Hold A Flame To You.” The family also appeared on The Simple Life alongside Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie.
5. She has beauty AND brains.
While still a high school student, Kesha used to sneak into Belmont University to attend classes and learn more about several different subject not taught in her school. She even achieved a 1500 SAT score.
6. She’s an LGBT and animal rights activist.
Kesha has strongly shown her support for the LGBT movement and also voices her support for the rights of animals. She believes that people should be accepted for who they are and that animals should be treated with respect and we love her for it.
7. There was a reason for the dollar sign in her name.
Kesha initially used the “$” symbol in her name as a way to stylize it and to make it look cooler. There wasn’t any financial motive behind it and Kesha has even said that the sign was ironic because she was broke at the time as a struggling singer. She changed to her given name after leaving rehab and reemerging back onto the music scene.
