In a world that glorifies thigh gaps, rejects cellulite, and thinks Mama June’s surgical weight-loss is the biggest news story of the year, little examples of women embracing their bodies are always refreshing.
Florida mother Allison Kimmey wants her 4-year-old to grow up feeling beautiful and strong, so when her daughter, Cambelle, asked about her mother’s stretch marks on the beach, Allison was careful how to respond.
“When I was a little older than you, I got some stripes when I grew really fast,” Allison explained. “Some of these stripes are from when I had you growing in my tummy.”
The Florida mother then noticed how her stretch marks looked in the sun, and added: “They are shiny and sparkly, aren’t they pretty?”
Her answer totally achieved the desired effect, as Cambelle immediately asked: “When can I get some?”
Allison detailed the entire encounter in a Facebook post, which has now been shared more than 100,000 times. Users are floored by the heartwarming story and are praising Allison for teaching her little girl to grow up proud of her body.
Cellulite and stretch marks are exactly as taboo as we decide they are. By rejecting society-ingrained body-shame and flaunting who she is, Allison is not only setting a positive message for her daughter; she is telling women as a whole to be proud of their bodies, whatever size, shape, or form.
We hope that Cambelle takes her mother’s lessons to heart and grows up embracing her body, just as her mother does.
