Step Up alums Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan Tatum are responsible for starting the never-ending dance movie franchise that should have stopped at one, starring in the sultriest Lip Synch Battle to ever be aired, and making our society collectively believe in love again.
Now, finally, we know this photogenic couple’s origin story, and it involves an ultimatum, a busy filming schedule, and a sombrero.
Dewan Tatum opened up on The Ellen Show about the beginnings of this epic marriage, explaining that she gave her now-husband an ultimatum to be exclusive.
“He did this whole thing where he didn’t want to be in a relationship,” she explained, “so I was like, ‘Look, if you want to date other people and be free, that’s fine, but we’re not going to hang out and watch movies. You’ve got to figure out what you want, because I know I want to be in a relationship with you.'”
Of course, the ultimatum worked. Three days later, Tatum came home from a “crazy, wild tequila night” with the dancers from Step Up and stopped by Dewan Tatum’s hotel “at 2 a.m….banging on the door…And I go and I open the door, and he’s in a sombrero. He’s in underwear, underwear, sombrero and Ugg boots, and he’s like, ‘Let’s do this.'”
Disclaimer: No one try to pull this off who isn’t Channing Tatum, please.
The story gets even better, because the next day, no one could find Tatum on set, so Dewan Tatum was forced to tell a P.A. that he was in her room. When Tatum finally came to set, the entire set began slow-clapping.
How did they manage to keep this hilarious anecdote under wraps for over a decade?
It’s a story for the (romance) books.
