Well, I’m suddenly a lot more confident than when I woke up this morning! According to a study done by Match.com, 87% of singles on Match say that people with a healthy sense of adventure are perceived as extremely attractive… That’s right, extremely attractive.
Rejoice my fellow thrill chasers, spontaneous road trip takers and all ye blessed/cursed with a wicked case of wanderlust. According to science, we’re hot commodities. (Wait, so why am I still single? Hmmm.)
Chief Scientific Advisor for Match and Biological Anthropologist Dr. Helen Fisher explains this intriguing phenomenon:
“Novelty triggers the dopamine system in the brain to make you feel alert, focused, energetic, optimistic…and often romantic, making one’s sense of adventure the ultimate aphrodisiac. So when you find an adventurous partner, you are likely to have a companion who will keep you lively, healthy and romantic too.”
Now there’s some relationship advice I can get behind. It was also discovered that 73% of singles on Match would be more attracted to a partner who shares items on their bucket list (because deep down everybody just wants somebody to go on a bunch of crazy, spontaneous adventures with them).
Because we love you, here are the top 10 bucket list items based on the lists from the survey:
1. Fall in love (83 percent).
2. Go on a wine tour in Napa (53 percent).
3. Change someone’s life for the better (52 percent).
4. Get to my ideal weight (47 percent).
5. Go on a safari (45 percent).
6. Ride a hot air balloon (45 percent).
7. See the Northern Lights (45 percent).
8. Go to the Super Bowl (43 percent).
9. Swim with dolphins (39 percent).
10. Travel through Europe (38 percent).
I don’t know about you, but all of these sound amazing to me, which is why I personally find it very cool that a whopping 66% of singles on Match would like to check off one or more bucket list items while on a date because life should be adventurous. It gets better too! Match.com is now hosting the Bucket List Series, a series of 600 events guaranteed to help you get checking away. (I may need to sign up for Match.) To make life easier, Match has also included a feature on their profiles allowing users to showcase their bucket lists.
“Ten’s not enough! I need more bucket list ideas,” you may be saying to yourself right now. Here are seven more awesome ideas to fuel your adventure drive!
1. Go windsurfing.
A little fun in the sun can be just what you need to get in tune with your adventurous spirit. The sand and surf have always had a special pull for those of us with a little extra lust for life. Don’t know how? Take a class! After all, life’s too short to not act on whims every now and then.
2. Go white water rafting.
This is a personal favorite of mine, although you’d never guess if you saw me in person. There’s just something about traveling down a river with your adrenaline pumping that’s just so addicting. Don’t believe me? Try it for yourself.
3. Go out of your way to catch a rare celestial event.
If you’re an avid sky-watcher, you know why this one is so awesome. Comets, eclipses and meteor showers are some of the most magical things in the world, but sometimes you really have to go out of your way to see them. Why not make it a date and bring that special someone? I’m sure they’d love it too.
4. Climb a mountain.
The views, the adventure, the two of you up above the clouds. Sure, it may be scary at times, but looking back, you’ll have memories that last a lifetime! Hey, it worked for that one couple.
5. Plan a killer road trip.
So many of us assume we have to go to another continent to have an adventure, when there’s so much to explore right in your own back yard! Do some research and hit the road! It can be a short trip, or cross-country. The sky’s the limit!
6. Learn to dance
We can’t deny it, dancing is sexy. While some have been training since they could crawl, some of us aren’t so coordinated. That doesn’t mean we can’t try though! After all, what’s more adventurous than learning something new and throwing yourself into it?
7. Go to a drive-in cinema.
Adventures can be relaxing too. I know what you’re thinking, and yes, drive-in theaters do still exist! I’ve been to a few in my time, and they’re absolutely lovely. You may need to work to find one by you though.
Whether you were feeling a little down about yourself or just looking for some new exciting additions to your own personal bucket list, know that one truth remains: you’re hot stuff. Just keep on doing you and rest assured, love will follow (maybe in a kayak, or on a ski lift somewhere, which would be awesome). Why not share some of your own adventurous tales?
