Netflix recently released all of the episodes from season five of its hit show Orange Is the New Black and fans are all over it. There are already rumors speculating about when the next season is coming out and what’s it’s going to be about. In honor of the newest season of our fave Netflix original, here are a few things that you probably didn’t know about the show.
1. OITNB is based on a true story.
If you’re a fan of the show, you’ll already know this but for all the newbies, Orange Is the New Black is actually based on the real experiences of Piper Kerman, who inspired Taylor Schilling’s character, Piper Chapman, on the show. While Kerman says the show isn’t meant to be a docu-drama, it does retell many of her real life experiences.
2. The crime is legit.
In the show, Kerman’s character gets jail time for money laundering. In reality, Kerman fell in love with a woman caught in an international drug ring. In the book, she calls her Nora but in the show we know her as Alex. Piper Kerman was found guilty of illegal smuggling from Chicago to Brussels, Belgium for 10 years until the law finally caught up with her.
3. The real Piper was not put in solitary confinement.
Season two opens up with Piper getting solitary for attacking Pennsatucky. Kerman never served solitary confinement but she did testify before the Senate in 2014 on behalf of eliminating the use of solitary confinement as a punishment.
4. Furlough didn’t happen either.
A huge plot point for Piper in season two was the death of her grandmother. She finds out she’s dying while incarcerated and misses her death. She was able to get furlough and go home for a couple days in time for the funeral. Kerman’s grandmother did actually pass while she was in prison but she never got furlough or even a chance to say goodbye.
5. The characters are based on real people.
Including Piper and Alex’s characters, just about every character in the show is based on a real person. Everyone knows that Lavern Cox’s character Sophia was created for the show, but there actually was a transgender inmate that lived next door to Kerman’s cell. Kerman calls the inmate Vanessa in the book. Red’s character is also a real person IRL. Kerman calls her Pop in her book of memoirs and dedicates the book to her.
There you go, OITNB fans! Go and binge the newest season of the show with all your newfound information in mind. And if you’ve already binged the show, wait patiently (or impatiently) for the newest season.
