Dan Humphrey is going to be gracing us again in all of his moody glory. Well, technically not Dan Humphrey the character, but Penn Badgley (the actor) is coming back to television after a five-year hiatus. The former Gossip Girl star hasn’t done much since the finale. He’s been in four movies and guest starred in two episodes of The Slap. Badgley has been focusing on his band Mother and touring with them. His Instagram is super moody rocker lately and I’m into it. Oh, and he got married twice to his wife Domino Kirke. The second time was a boujee reception. But now now he’s back. Bless.
Badgley is confirmed to be starring in a new Lifetime thriller, You. The series is based off of Caroline Kepnes’ novel of the same name. The series will be centered around Badgley’s character Joe, who is a bookstore manager. I haven’t read the novel but it seems weirdly similar to Gossip Girl. Joe uses technology to make the women of his dreams fall in love with him, which seems a lot like Humphrey. The difference? Joe uses technology to remove obstacles and people that get in the way of getting the girl he likes. I feel like a bookstore manager is a pretty low-profile job, so for Joe to be this dark is weird and exciting.
No matter how dark Badgley goes with this role, he will probably still be compared to Dan Humphrey. His character was iconic and will live in infamy as Gossip Girl. You got a straight-to-series order from the network, so it’ll be interesting to see if Badgley will be able to step out of Dan’s shadow.
