Is Justin Bieber’s ‘Friends’ About Selena Gomez?

It’s been three years since “Jelena” officially broke up, yet we here we still are, talking about/listening to songs about their dramatic breakup.

Justin Bieber has been the king of great collaborations lately and the song he released today is no different.

The song is in collaboration with BloodPop and is about what life is like after a breakup. Many fans were quick to point out that lots of the lyrics seem as if they are talking about Selena Gomez and things about their relationship and breakup.

In the first verse, Bieber sings, “I was wondering about your mama, did she get that job she wanted?” This could be in reference to the fact that it was Gomez’s mom and Bieber’s mom who first set up a meeting between the two. Gomez’s mother is no longer her manager but the two worked together as executive producers on Netflix‘s 13 Reasons Why.

Bieber goes on to sing “I’m just curious about her, honest/ Girl you wondering why I’ve been calling?/Like I’ve got ulterior motives.” This could reference the fact that Bieber said in an interview in 2015 that he and Gomez talked on and off after their breakup because she was “his homie.” It could also reference the fact that Gomez recently said on a radio show that she has to change her phone number often and in 2016 after the Sofia Richie Instagram drama, Gomez apparently asked people to not give him her new number.

“No we didn’t end this so good/But you know that what we had was something so good.” Gomez and Bieber had a very public falling out when she commented, “If you can’t handle the hate, then stop posting pictures of your girlfriend lol. It should be special between you two only. Don’t be mad at your fans. They love you.” on a series of Instagram pictures Bieber posted with then girlfriend Sofia Richie after threatening to make his Instagram private because of all the hate Richie was getting. The “we had something so good part” might refer to the fact that in 2016 Gomez liked and commented “perfect” on throwback picture Bieber posted of the two of them kissing with the caption “feels.”

“Wonderin’ if you’ve got a body, to hold tight since I left.” Bieber has repeatedly spoken negatively about The Weeknd, Gomez’s current boyfriend, after the first pictures of the two of them leaked. He told TMZ that he thought Gomez was dating him for publicity and then later called The Weeknd’s music “whack.”

Now we don’t really know where the two stand but we do know that the era of Jelena’s love was a simpler time.

“Friends” Lyrics

[Verse 1]
I was wonderin’ ’bout your mama
Did she get that job she wanted?
Sold that car that gave her problems?
I’m just curious ’bout her, honest

[Pre-Chorus]
Girl, you wonderin’ why I’ve been callin’?
Like I’ve got ulterior motives
No, we didn’t end this so good
But you know we had something so good

[Chorus]
So I’m wondering, can we still be friends? (oh-oh)
Can we still be friends? (oh-oh)
Doesn’t have to end
And if it ends, can we be friends?
Can we be friends?
Can we be friends?

Wonderin’ if you got a body
To hold you tight since I left
Wonderin’ if you think about me
Actually, don’t answer that

[Pre-Chorus]
Now you wonderin’ why I’ve been callin’?
Like I’ve got ulterior motives
No, we didn’t end this so good
But you know we had something so good

[Chorus]
So I’m wondering, can we still be friends? (oh-oh)
Can we still be friends? (oh-oh)
Doesn’t have to end
And if it ends, can we be friends?
Can we be friends?
Can we be friends?
And if it ends, can we be friends?

[Pre-Chorus]
Now you wonderin’ why I’ve been callin’?
Like I’ve got ulterior motives
No, we didn’t end this so good
But you know we had something so good

[Chorus]
I’m wondering, can we still be friends? (oh-oh)
Can we still be friends? (oh-oh)
Doesn’t have to end
And if it ends, can we be friends?
