Sometimes we make fashion choices we’d rather forget (Juicy tracksuits, anyone?), but certain looks just keep coming back. Retro fashion seems to fall into that category. 70s-inspired pieces especially seem to make a comeback every few years, whether through telltale shapes and silhouettes or color palettes. There are 70s-themed pieces all over the place right now. Check out this awesome post from College Fashion – they’ve put together outfits inspired by the movie Boogie Nights. If you haven’t seen the movie, I recommend it!
It was Mark Wahlberg’s first big hit, and it takes place in the 70s. Head on over to College Fashion to find out how to get that 70s glam look!

History always repeats itself, and this is especially true in the fashion world! Fashion inspired by the 1970s was huge on the runways and in stores this past spring and summer, and from what I’ve seen so far, it looks like this trend is going to carry well into the fall! While you may be able to score some great vintage pieces by rummaging through your mom’s closet, there are also tons of 70s-inspired fashions available at almost every store — and at great prices! Check out some of these 70s-inspired pieces that are all just $20 or under! Read More »

Following hot off the trail of the 70′s inspired flares from last week, I’m still feeling like Stevie Nicks. My outfits lately have been hippie-boho chic and my giant mass of curls has been set free. I was assessing my closet and noticed that I do own quite a few pieces inspired by this hip decade: the flared jeans, maxi skirts, braided headbands (worn straight across the forehead of course!). However, I’m missing one thing – a crochet vest! Since this is such a trendy piece, I didn’t want to break the bank with it and luckily Nasty Gal came to my rescue with their Fringed Crochet Vest.

The sun is shining. The birds are chirping. And I’m finally able to put the big winter coat away. It’s time for iced caramel macchiatos and driving with the windows open and the music blasting. It’s time for spring.
Well…almost.
For me it won’t quite be spring until I’ve done my spring shopping. And I plan to do a lot of spring shopping. Bright colors. Neutral shoes. 70s inspired shirts. Lady like pieces. Long skirts. So much to choose from. And so little cash. Sigh. I guess I’ll have to stick with my top five. These are the spring trends I just can’t live without. And you shouldn’t either. Read More »

[It's pretty obvious that the average CollegeCandy reader has some very strong opinions. Opinions that she likes to share with everyone on the site. We love a strong woman (unless she happens to be charging at us with her fists raised), so we thought we'd give her a real forum to discuss her thoughts, feelings, and perspectives. Every Friday I'll be featuring a hot topic (like going down! ) and leaving it up to you, the readers, to duke it out. So, read it and get your debate on in the comments section below!]
The fashion industry loves to bring back old fashion trends. Sometimes that’s a good thing (hello, waist-cinching belts!); other times, not so good (‘80s linebacker shoulder pads, really?). And then there are those times when I’m just not quite sure what to think. Enter tie dye. Yep, this flower child trend is back on the runways and it’s got me scratching my head. Help me out here ladies, “tie do” or “tie don’t”?
I can sort of see the appeal of tie dye; it tends to be bright, which is always great, particularly in the warm months. It also has a cool abstract thing working and since abstract patterns have been very in for a while now, this look makes perfect sense. On top of that, tie dye has that easy “I totally didn’t spend an hour and a half staring at my closet to pick out this outfit” vibe. Basically, it’s got everything you’d want from your fav beach dress, but now you can wear it around town without having to claim it’s laundry day. Bonus points for the potential DIY factor. Who inspires your style? Or better question, WHAT inspires your style? Many of us use celebrities (like Khloe Kardashian) as style inspiration, even though, most of the time, they are being dressed from head to toe by the best stylists. Which we don’t have. And sometimes it’s damn near impossible to work their Hollywood looks into our not-so-Hollywood lives. I’ve made it my mission to tap into the mind of a fashion stylist and show you how to take your style inspiration – whatever it may be – and make it more, well, you!
I’ve seen a lot of movies in my 19 and a half years on this Earth, and no character has ever inspired me like Kate Hudson’s in Almost Famous. (If you haven’t seen it, you must. Right now!) This movie is based off of the rock and roll music scene of the early 1970s and Penny Lane, the leading lady/groupie, represents this era with her free-spirited, eclectic-yet-chic bohemian wardrobe.
We’ve come a long way since Penny Lane’s time, but the bohemian look has stuck around, cycling in and out of fashion every year. And I can’t help but love it.
No matter the decade, this style is very wearable, whether to a theme party or to a long day of classes. The key to not looking too costume-y is taking some of the quintessential 70s items and mixing them with a few modern pieces. It’s easy to incorporate the elements of the early 70s rock era to your look with vintage flowers, classic flared jeans, sunglasses (Aviator or Elton John-style,) a furry jacket, and many different styles of boots. All of which are seen everywhere right now. Corduroy, velvet, and suede were also very popular back in Penny Lane’s days (or when our parents were our age, drinking Coors and listening to some Led Zeppelin) and can easily be picked up and incorporated into your own Boho-chic look as well.
