A couple months ago, we featured the creepiness that is Dov Charney, the owner of American Apparel.
Sure, the man looks like a serial killer and admits to getting it on with, like, every one of his employees, but he sure knows how to sell a product!
We’ve all seen the ads – the racy, half-naked and scantily clad models (think the HOT Abercrombie & Fitch ads meets younger-looking hipsters). There’s something raw about these ads, almost dirty – and that’s exactly what is getting younger-looking hipsters to buy into the brand.
According to AMNY, one of the store managers said, “This is the Lower East Side….I would be disappointed in the neighborhood if it was offended by this. It’s not pornographic. This is art.” Read More »

In an effort to woo the growing Latino population in the United States, Macy’s went and did something stupid.
After partnering up with a Mexico City based company “NaCo”, Macy’s added and then subsequently did away with, a line of potentially racist T-shirts.
While NaCo is apparently popular is Mexico, American audiences aren’t so keen on the clothing line.
T-shirts with sayings like “I is for Illegal”, “G is for Greencard” and “Brown is the new White” were pulled from the shelves of Macy’s after many consumers deemed them offensive. Read More »

There’s no doubt our culture has been stuck in a pit of hypersexuality for some time now. And there’s also no doubt that women are trying to figure out their place in this sex-driven society; do we embrace the attitudes men have long carried with them, use our sexuality to gain power, flaunt what we got? Do we make a sex tape and laugh about it, or pray to God to keep us pure until Prince Charming arrives in his black SUV?
Wendy Shalit, author of the book “Girls Gone Mild”, claims a new revolution is upon us, and that revolution abhors sex tapes, preferring to wait for Mr. Charming instead.
In her book, Shalit claims “the young women [of] today, put off by our hypersexualized culture, are reverting to an earlier idea of femininity. They wear modest clothing and even act with unbrazen kindness. They don’t mind abstinence programs at school, and they prefer a version of feminism based on self-respect rather than sex-performance parity. They also take matters into their own hands when craven adults neglect to object to the objectionable.”
The older generation of mainstream feminists, Shalit says, “are so committed to the idea of casual sex as liberation that they can’t appreciate or even quite understand these younger feminists.” She goes on to say women who advocate casual sex “just don’t understand that pursuing crudeness is the problem, not the solution.” Read More »

I am a college graduate. Ew, even after 4 days of being able to say that, I still don’t like the sound of it. But I have sort of, kinda, come to grips with beginning this new phase of life.
In my ploy to stay uber busy while at home in the Midwest to avoid boredom or a meltdown during this limbo post-graduation phase, I have been on a cleansing mission. I feel that some things just need to go once you are not a college co-ed anymore.
Example A: Abercrombie and Fitch clothes. Yesterday, I sifted through my whole wardrobe and exiled all clothes with the logo splashed across the front or any items that blatantly looked like they came from a scene in the catalog. Yes, this was hard, but I felt it was time. Read More »
