Genarlow Wilson – No Justice in Georgia!

20061219143909990006.jpgNot sure if any of you have heard – probably have by now – about Genarlow Wilson, who was convicted at age 17 of having consensual oral sex with a girl age 15. He was sentenced to 10 years and has already served 27 months — FINALLY, some judge took his head out his ass long enough to go…WHOA, WTF are we doing?

Half the internet has made this an issue of white vs. black, about double standards and race discrimination. Don’t get me wrong, there are still some places in the South that still think the Civil War was an impass, but this poor kid was convicted because we have a judicial system that goes by absolutes. “If/Then” statements rule half of the laws out there. Genarlow was considered an adult, while his partner was a minor – that is the legal justification of the “crime”. PLUS, they have demanded that he register as a sex offender.

In this case, there are many other factors: he was also accused of raping a 17 year old girl (ACQUITTED), he and all members at the party were drunk and stoned (NO CHARGES FILED) and some idiot video taped the whole thing for his personal whack-off library. Everyone is bringing up all of these other charges, when they discuss this case, but there is no reason – he was found NOT GUILTY – which is only the basis of our entire judicial system.

How does this case involve us?

Loneliness is a Bitch. Ways NOT to Deal.

lonliness.jpgLoneliness doesn’t just suck, it blows. I know this because I have dealt with it first hand. The emotions, the weight gain, the boredom. With a new city, a new job and no new friends to speak of, loneliness and I were pretty tight.

If I told you I had a sure-fire way to beat it, I’d be lying. Because if I had found the magic formula, it wouldn’t have taken me 8 months to realize that graduating from college in four years wasn’t the worst decision of my life.

Fortunately for you, I have a few good tips about what NOT to do. Whether you are kicking it at home for the summer or making your way in a brand new city, these tips are sure to keep you from going as crazy as, well, I did. Read More »

My Impending Quarterlife Crisis

anxiety-1.jpgOkay, I was aware that I would have to worry about a midlife crisis somewhere down the road. But not for at least another 20 years when I would suddenly feel the need to date much younger men and buy a bright red convertible.

Apparently, I will have a life crisis sooner than I previously thought: the “Quarterlife Crisis.”

It’s a relatively recent phenomenon that is now recognized by many therapists and professionals in the mental health field, and refers to the years out of college when reality sets in. Technically, it is “a period of anxiety, uncertainty and inner turmoil that often accompanies the transition to adulthood.”

Awesome, can’t wait. Basically, young, twentysomethings realize that their entry level jobs suck and that a successful career isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Ahhh, please don’t make me graduate on Sunday! I don’t want to deal with life, especially this new crisis that I will apparently go through. Read More »

A Personal Reflection About the End of an Era

collegegrad.jpgSo I haven’t posted in a while, mainly because I’m graduating in 20-freakin’-days, and boy oh boy the grind is on to make it across that finish line. With finals whoopin’ my ass 24/7 and the non-stop search for a job, I’ve barely had time to breathe, let alone get my “last month of college-let’s go crazy” drink on. It’s extremely depressing—and even more stressful.

I’m almost glad it’s over. (But not really—it sucks so bad!)

Anyway…with the little time I do have to sit back, atop my roof and think (we finally found a way up there and it’s incredible!) I’ve been reminiscing about the last four years and how great they have been. About all the good times and even the bad. About the tears we’ve cried and the laughs we shared, and most importantly, about the friends that have truly become like family—a family that is soon to part. It’s heart-breaking really.

But I’ve found a light at the end of the tunnel. I’ve discovered something sweet in this simply bitter situation. It’s the start of something new and I’m actually excited about it. Read More »

Hello Adulthood, Goodbye Belly Piercing???

23626527.jpg

No, this post is not about getting my period or losing my virginity. Instead, it chronicles the revelation I had last night while standing in front of my sorority’s bathroom mirror after a shower.

I am 22, set to graduate college in a month and a half, and start a “real” life. Everything about me, looks and personality wise, has matured over the past four years. I feel pretty confident that I am ready to attack the post-graduate world.

Yet, one small thing was holding me back: my belly button piercing.

The result of a Jersey shore vacation after my freshman year of high school, the small stone sparkled in the mirror’s reflection. I suddenly realized that my views on this piercing had changed and I now considered it more trashy than classy. It had been a part of me for so long, that I forgot to even think about it.
