The Weekly Ten: Our Favorite Bros

What up, brah?

Every week, I write a list. Definitely not a to-do list (because it’s not satisfying checking “browse J.Crew’s website” and “Re-watch every episode of Rachel Zoe” off a list) and not “that list” (because I haven’t added to that list… in forever), but rather a list of whatever is relevant and weighing heavy on the CollegeCandy readers’ minds (or just mine) right now. This week? I’m all about the bros.

Love ‘em, hate ‘em, or love to Ice ‘em, bros are weighing heavy on CollegeCandy’s mind lately. Look no further than your local college campus or frat party to find the bro of your dreams. I think what’s so great about bros is that you just have such a diversity. From frat bros to sensitive guitar-playing bros to the chill smoker bro, there’s a bro for everyone.

But bros aren’t just creepin’ around your campus. Nope, you can even find them everywhere you turn in popped collar culture. They’re officially taking over the world….and I like it. In fact, here are ten of my faves.

10. Brett Favre: The Egomaniacal Athlete Bro.
A bro until retirement. Or  not. Or retirement again. Or not.

9. Nate from Gossip Girl (Chace Crawford): Trust Fund Manhattan Bad-Boy Bro
So maybe Nate is a bit more girly than your average bro, but you better believe with that slamming athletic bod, penchant for trouble and prepster style, he’s our choice Upper East Side bro. Plus, he’s totally got a secret, tortured edge to him.

8. Don Draper from Mad Men (Jon Hamm): Playboy Ad Exec in the ’60s Bro
Gotta love a bro who can drink during the day, schmooze with other bros and womanize like nobody’s business. It’s okay, it was the ’60s; that sort of thing doesn’t happen nowadays. Right? Read More »

The 10 Most Cliche College Posters of All Time

We all place a large emphasis on our dorm room decor. And we should; how we live says a lot about us to everyone who passes through. And what’s sending the biggest message? The poster. People can learn a lot about you from what you hang on the wall and college students know it, which explains the abundance of poster sales that invade the student center every season.

Are you a refined pearl-wearing girl like Audrey, or super stoner like the Bob Marley?
Maybe the ever-classic Animal House poster is more your style (if your style includes a beer bong and five year plan).

Pay attention and you’ll notice the same rotation of prints appearing on dorm doors and scuffed white walls all over campus.  What?  You thought that motivational poster was unique?  Yeah, good luck defining your undergrad identity one Abbey Road poster at a time…

You wanna stand out this Fall? Avoid hanging one of these 10 cliche posters over your bunk bed. Read More »

Halloween Costumes for the Procrastinators Of The World

toga halloweenSomewhere between midterms and fall parties and oversized flannel shirts paired with black leggings tucked into slouchy crochet style Uggs, it hits you. It’s Halloween crunch time. One morning you roll out of bed and realize your roommates have already perfected their Village People getup, your best friend and her boyfriend are pop culture referencing the shiz out of Taylor and Kanye, and your pseudo-fratty neighbors have their imitation silk Wal-Mart robes ready to make Hugh Hefner proud.

But with T-minus 36 hours to arguably the biggest party night (week?) of the year, you got nothing. Eff. You need to throw something awesome together fast.

Never fear.

Here’s a quick list of insta-costumes, all using stuff you probably have in your closet already or can snap up at Target on the cheapsies.

Super Hero: Mid-drift baring Wonder Woman costumes are so overdone. And also $60. Ouch. Save yourself the cash and the killer ab workout and opt for bright swimsuit bottoms over leggings, topped with a cami or another snug-fitting top. Decorate with your monogram in masking tape or Google image search a cause—maybe you’ll be super pizza bagel girl, or captain celebrity gossip. Complete the look with one of those thick workout headbands; fashion a cape from a sheet, or make a run to the fabric store for something snazzier. Wear boots and recruit sidekicks.

Beyonce: This one may take a little more effort (and guts) but if you got it, work it. You can pick up a black leotard at Wal-Mart, or any dance supply store. From there, all you need is a gaudy ring, tall heels, taller hair (great time to break out the Bump It) and YouTube dance moves. Convince the boyf, or another suitable male, to go as Jay-Z. Otherwise, live it up as a single lady. Hello, Sasha Fierce. Read More »

5 Reasons I’m Over Crazy Frat Parties

frat_party_time1.jpgTwo days into freshman year I went to my first frat party. Walking into the Greek lettered doors made me feel like I had just stepped onto a movie set. Everyone had red solo cups! Everyone was dancing and having oodles of fun! And Oh my god! Is that an ice-luge!? Yeah, best night of my life…until the cops came.

Regardless, for the next two years I lived and loved the open frat parties. I thought our love affair would never end…and then, this past weekend we broke up. Now, I still enjoy the small frat mixers but the crazy parties, have gotten…well, old. “Why? What could be better than living in an animal house world?” You ask.

Well, here are my top five answers.

The abundance of scantily clad freshmen. Sure, I was once a freshman myself, and being away from home and being able to wear and do whatever you want is exciting, but eventually you will regret wearing a bandana-sized piece of cloth as a top.  And I’m all for sex and I’m all for dancing but do you really need to attempt both simultaneously on the dance floor in front of everyone? It seems these open parties contain about 80% girls and about 75% of those are freshmen girls. Trust me ladies, the body shot phrase will get old, and I’m over watching it.

One word: Keystone. Really guys, Keystone Light, at every party? Keystone has got to be one of the grossest, cheapest liquids ever created. Spring for something a few notches higher. I’m not saying I expect margaritas to be blended before my eyes (although that would be amazing) but there are better beverages out there than Keystone. PLEASE switch it up! Boxed wine would be an immense step up for just as much money! Get some class, guys. Read More »
