In honor of Women’s History Month, CollegeCandy has decided to spotlight some of the world’s most influential women. First, naturally, we focused on the women from our generation. Then, we highlighted some fierce females in their 30s. After that we celebrated the phenomenal women in their 40s. And now we’re cheering on the women who inspire us to be our best selves every single day. Anything can happen, and just like these women have done in their 50s and beyond, we can make a difference in the world at any age.

Have you ever noticed that guys have, like, the WORST timing ever?

When it comes to breaking up, dudes take no consideration to the fact that the holidays are coming up and they leave you stranded during the most romantic time of the year! *ahem* Bastard *ahem*

Well we here at CollegeCandy say “Eff ‘em! We refuse to let boys ruin our holiday fun.”

So stop blasting the most depressing break up songs (Sinead O’Connor’s “Nothing Compares” = waterworks) and rocking yourself to sleep clutching a box of tissues. Instead try dancing by yourself in your room to these empowering songs that are sure to have you over the d-bag that dumped you and making out with some hottie hot-hot under the mistle toe in no time:

Emily David Will (And Should) Put A Boot Up Miley Cyrus’ Ass

Meet Emily David, aka Queen Emily. She’s a 40-year-old single mom, a snappy dresser, and the only talented person on Tuesday night’s episode of America’s Got Talent.

I haven’t heard such a great rendition of Chain of Fools since Turkey Sub from School of Rock. It was proud, soulful, sassy, and confident. It was the voice of a woman who’d worked hard, walked through hell and lived to tell about it.

In her interview, Emily said, “So many times I think it will never happen for me…but then I go and look in the mirror and say ‘Why not me?’”

Why not you Emily? Why shouldn’t you take this show (and this country) by the shoulders and shake us out of a crappy music slump?

We’ve put up with pop starlets too long. Even those with good voices haven’t had the life experience to make their songs really sing. We’ve confused drunk driving, pantie dropping and stage parents with celebrity and even worse…with talent. And what do we have to show for it? Why should we wait for Disney to tell us who the next pop idol/future pariah is when hard-working, truly gifted people people like Emily are right in front of us?

So enough is enough. It’s a shame it took a kind-of-crappy reality show for me to discover this, but it was worth it. Emily David can and should take home the crown on America’s Got Talent. If she doesn’t, can we at least not give it to the Britney Spears guy?

Big Things In Music…Other Than Aretha Franklin’s Boobs

Despite what you might hearing the media, there are big things happening in music other than Aretha Franklin’s boobs (but seriously, how ginormous are they?!).  I thought I’d share the rundown with all of you so you can stay on top of what’s happening in the biz.
First thing, I think they stopped saying “biz” several years ago. Remove it from your lexicon.
- The bloggers over at BestWeekEver exposed me to a little website called Muxtape.com today. You can upload your own music and turn it into a playlist that’s accessible to everyone on the site. It’s a great way to access new music (I got to fall in love with Cat Power all over again this morning) or just share your impeccable music tastes with everybody.
The uploading is a little slow, possibly due to an unusual amount of traffic, but invest some time in it if you have a few minutes.
- Weezer frontman, Rivers Cuomo, needs your help writing a song. He’s working on his first solo disc and he’s taking input from the YouTube community to set the song’s mood, title and now he’s searching for chords. Cuomo is a great composer/songwriter so I’m not sure if this move is a promotional stunt or a cure for some serious writer’s block. I suppose if the song stinks, I will have no one to blame but myself…and thousands of other fans.
- Wal-Mart is backing record companies into a corner with their plan to significantly drop the price of CDs. They want to sell the hottest new releases for $10, and other albums between $5 and $12. Because Wal-Mart is the largest music retailer in the country, record companies are virtually held captive to their demands. The new plan would mean more costs for the music companies, but could ultimately mean more CDs sold. The pricetag may be worth the risk to bail out the quickly sinking CD industry.
- The Aretha Franklin mention was very intentional. The Queen of Soul turned 66 recently and if it’s at all possible, her boobs got even bigger.

         


You Must Listen To: Women With SOUL

There’s something about listening to a woman tear her heart open onstage…husky voice dripping in longing, captivating eyes staring out at the audience, that is truly beautiful.
Women with soul speak for all of us who have gone through heartbreak, fallen in love, cried on the bathroom floor when our hearts fell into the pit of our stomachs after seeing our ex with his new girl…  We’ve all been there, and the women who sing about it have been there too, putting everything we’ve cried and screamed about into words.
Though there are always the classics; Nina Simone, Aretha Franklin, Billie Holiday, Etta James and Ella Fitzgerald among countless others, there are women breaking new ground with the same grit, the same heart-wrenching confessions at the mic, and the same beautiful voices gliding over bossa nova grooves, brass, and funky drum beats.
These women have it all. So light some candles, pour yourself a glass of wine and feel empowered, cry, remember, whatever…they’ll take you somewhere and I promise they’ll hold your heart in the palm of their hands the entire time.
*Duffy: when I say she’s going to give Amy Winehouse a run for her money, I mean it.

*Lizz Wright:  onto her sophomore album, Lizz has that neo-soul vibe down to a T. She makes you want to dreadlock your hair and dance all groovy around candlelight, and actually has some amazing songs to GET DOWN to.

*Toby Lightman: Though her first album didn’t have it’s expected success with her remake of Mary J. Blige’s “Real Love”, she is undoubtedly an incredible artist and the second album proves it.
