The Grammy Awards, also known as music’s biggest night, will air live on February 12…this Sunday! From the crazy fashion outfits to the latest concoction Lady Gaga will use to make her entrance, anything can happen. This award ceremony is unique because it is solely dedicated to contributions in the music industry. And while most of the winners are, well, musicians, there are a select few that take on double duty.

In honor of the 2012 Grammys, here’s a list of 12 actors who have brought home the coveted Gramophone.

If you’ve ever watched Breakfast at Tiffany’s and sighed, thinking to yourself, “I want to live as fabulously as Holly,” well have I got some good news for you. Scrape together your drinking money and start checking for change in the sofa cushions, ladies, because the Manhattan apartment Audrey Hepburn’s character famously lived in is for sale! I won’t mention that the asking price is $5.85 million. Wouldn’t want to rain on your parade, now would I?

I love chick flicks. Lots of them. There are so many amazing movies about women and for women, some about love, and some about life, that are labeled as chick flicks. And I’m not ashamed to admit that I’ve watched them more times than I can keep track of.

So with that in mind I thought I’d dedicate this week’s weekly ten to my favorite chick flicks of all time. Some are recent and some are not so recent,  but they’re all pretty damn great.

10. Miss Congeniality. Oh Sandra Bullock, how I love you! It’s refreshing to watch a movie and see a woman who’s more comfortable holding a gun than she is walking in heels. She doesn’t need a man, but she gets one any way and that’s kind of great. Don’t you think?

9. Thelma and Louise. Girl power, ladies. Girl power. This is a story about friendship and fun (and felonies). Even if they do end up driving off a cliff together at the end of it, they do it together, right? Oh don’t look at me like that. It’s a fun movie.

8. Sixteen Candles. Every girl needs to see this movie at least once. It should be a rule. Because yes it’s outdated and yes no one would ever forget a girl’s sixteenth birthday anymore (She wouldn’t let them), but  this one is still so relatable. At the very least, we should all be forced to watch that dance scene before heading off to our own first big dance. It totally puts things in perspective.

7.  Dirty Dancing. Nobody puts baby in the corner. So that line might be a little bit cliché, but it’s also iconic. There’s no way I could make a list of the best chick flicks ever and not have the movie that gave us the time of our lives on here somewhere. Plus, you know, it’s Patrick Swayze.

6. When Harry Met Sally. Can a guy and a girl ever be just friends? Well the answer is absolutely not. And the evidence? This movie. But not only did this chick flick tackle that age-old question but it also gave us Meg Ryan faking it in a restaurant. Best. Scene. Ever.

5. The Devil Wears Prada. It’s Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway. Together these two could make anything work. But they didn’t need to do much with this one, a chick flick that wasn’t just about the romance, but rather about the struggle to find a balance between work and real life, and trying to determine how much you’re willing to give up along the way.  Plus, the clothes are  fab.

4. 10 Things I Hate About You. Heath Ledger. Need I say more? But no, really, what could have been just another teen movie, another chick flick about a girl and a guy and prom, does something different.  With its strong female lead, quirky characters, and Heath Ledger singing “I Love You Baby” on the bleachers how could anyone not love this movie?

3. Breakfast at Tiffany’s. It’s Audrey Hepburn. I don’t think it’s even possible for her to make a bad movie. But it’s probably the rain scene that lands this one the third spot. That and the adorable cat named cat. Who actually does belong to someone. Just like Audrey.

2. Bridget Jones’ Diary. When it comes down to it I probably love this movie because it’s a modern day retelling of Pride and Prejudice. But also because she tries to keep a diary. And because she tries (and fails) to keep the same new year’s resolutions as all of us. And a little bit because of Colin Firth and Hugh Grant.

1. Pretty Woman. My absolute favorite chick flick of  all time. I can’t remember a time when I didn’t love this movie (which means I was probably watching it when I was way too young.) And sure you can laugh at say it’s completely unrealistic and it’s about a hooker who falls in love with a sleazy business man. But that doesn’t matter. I love this movie. Because of “I want the fairy tale” and “Big Mistake. Huge” and the infamous piano scene, and a younger, cuter Richard Gere.

10. Sandra Bullock. Recently Bullock has begun to present herself as a truly empowering woman in my mind. She handled the whole Jesse James thing with such grace and elegance that you can’t help but love her. Plus, she actually left her cheating husband, which is more than you can say for some people.

9. Queen Latifah. An actor. A singer. A producer. A model. And also, a writer. I bet you didn’t know about her autobiography, Ladies First: Revelations of a Strong Woman. She tells her life story openly and honestly, without apology, reminding girls to “keep your roots.” Where we come from helps to shape who we are, after all.

8. Ellen DeGeneres. She’s never been afraid to be anything other than who she is, but she also has the good sense to be able to laugh about it. And just about everything else too. She’s done everything from starring in her own TV show to starting her own talk show, and judging on American Idol. Now she’s even starting her own record label. She takes life seriously without, taking life seriously.

7. Michelle Obama. A first lady that doesn’t fade into the background. A smart, accomplished, vibrant, woman who doesn’t lose her luster when with her very charismatic husband. She’s been complimented and criticized and handled both the way only a first lady could, but her clothes are just so much better.

6. Audrey Hepburn. Classic. Elegant. Stylish. She played complex characters while wearing Givenchy! She rocked the skinny jean way before we did. She brought us that “I believe in pink” speech that everyone always quotes but no one ever knows who said it first. Well, she did. And if that’s not enough to convince you, she’s also a favorite of one Blair Waldorf.

5. Meryl Streep. This woman has played more characters than I could ever hope to name, reinventing herself time and time again. She’s allowed herself to age. In Hollywood. And she’s still working. She’s well respected, gorgeous, and a real woman. One day, she’ll be one of the classics.

4. Tina Fey. In 2008 the Associated Press named her the performer who had the greatest impact on American culture and entertainment. And for once, that’s a stat that doesn’t make me shudder. This woman is funny and talented, and holds her own, whether she’s acting or impersonating.

3. Katharine Hepburn. The blonde Hepburn liked to wear pants in an age where most women just didn’t. While on the set of Bringing Up Baby her producers asked her to wear dresses and skirts instead of pants, and when she didn’t her pants disappeared. So Hepburn simply walked around set in her underwear until they returned. She was a woman who always spoke her mind, when most didn’t know they could yet.

2. Abigail Adams. Think back, way back, to the very beginning of the creation of our country. Abigail Adams was the wife of John Adams, the second president of the United States, but the reason I remember this particular first lady is because of the letters she often wrote to her husband. In 1776, two centuries before women would have the right to vote, before women’s rights were even a thought, Adams was writing to her husband asking him to “remember the ladies.”

1. You. And you. And you. And me. We are empowering women.  Or at least we can be, if we want to. Webster defines empowering as “to make (someone) stronger and more confident, esp. in controlling their life and claiming their rights.” We all have the ability to do that, this week, and every week. So take a cue from one of these lovely ladies and live your life the way you want, not the way someone else tells you to.

And while you’re at it, let’s take a moment to honor the empowering female figures in our lives the best way we know how: by taking it to Facebook. Change your profile picture to that of a woman who empowers you, then tell all the other ladies out there to do the same by copying the following message into your status:

“It’s Women’s Empowerment Week and CollegeCandy.com is asking women everywhere to celebrate empowering women by changing their profile pic this week to a woman that empowers and inspires them! Change your pic and copy this into your status to honor these women and get everyone else to do the same!”

Keep that photo up all week and hopefully we can start a women’s empowerment revolution that reminds everyone that women can be empowered for more than 7 days a year!

Glamour had listed their top six movie kisses of all time. And I have to say, I was a little disappointed.

The kisses they chose were certainly swoon worthy, but I didn’t think all of them deserved a top spot. And there were other kisses that were most definitely missing. Lots of kisses missing. Kisses that needed to be mentioned. So I selflessly spent hours and hours poring over YouTube video after YouTube video to compose this list for you, my top ten movie kisses of all time.

10. Jack and Rose, Titanic. Leo has come a long way since his days of freezing to death alongside a glacier, but I don’t think our generation will ever let him forget his days as a teen heart drop. This kiss, though not particularly impressive, sums up our teeny bopper days perfectly. It’s nostalgic and sweet and we’ll never let go.

9. Blane and Andie, Pretty in Pink. This list wouldn’t be complete without at least one Brat Pack shout out. And for me at least, it couldn’t be anything other than this movie. That final scene in the parking lot when Jack and Andie reunite at the senior prom after a huge fight just epitomizes everything I love and hate about teen angst and chick flicks. It’s cheesy and incredibly cliché but I would be lying if I said I didn’t wish something like that had happened at my high school prom.

8. Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth, Pride and Prejudice. Maybe it’s just the literature geek in me, but I find the kiss between Darcy and Elizabeth at the end of the 2007 adaption of Pride and Prejudice to be so romantic. It’s not particularly passionate or steamy, but it’s intimate all the same. It’s a kiss viewers have been waiting for throughout the entire movie. The buildup-from the angry rain arguments, to the subtle hand holding, to the forehead touching makes it totally worthy it.

7. Edward and Vivian, Pretty Woman. This one is here more for the dialogue that accompanies the kiss than the kiss itself, but I still felt like it needed to be mentioned. Richard Gere’s character has just climbed up a fire escape to get to Julia Roberts even though he’s desperately afraid of heights. He reaches Vivian and asks, “So what happens after her climbs up and rescues her?”  She says, “She rescues him right back.”  Then they kiss.

6. Edward and Bella, New Moon. I debated putting this one on here, really I did. Because there’s just so much “OMGz” drama that comes along with anything Twilight related. It reminds me of screaming teenage girls and Robert Pattinson’s hair, and Kristen Stewart’s inability to smile (and lots of articles I read in my feminism class last semester). But I put all of that aside, and I’m asking you to do the same. Because that kiss they shared at the end of New Moon, that was hot.

5. Lady and Tramp, Lady and the Tramp. I can never hear the lyrics to “That’s Amore” without thinking of these two. Just the sweetness and innocence of these two little dogs sharing meatballs and slurping on the same piece of spaghetti is too adorable for words. Cutest kiss ever.

4. Peter and Mary Jane, Spiderman. If it’s iconic enough for Seth and Summer to reenact on The OC, then its iconic enough to make this list. Upside down and in the rain, that kiss had every girl wanting to meet Toby McGuire in a dark alley.

3. Rhett and Scarlett, Gone With the Wind. Plastered on every movie poster ever made for this movie, this one is a classic. Against a bright red and orange sunset, Scarlett kisses Rhett just before he goes off to war. These two may not have a happy ending, but this kiss almost makes that worth it.

2. Fred and Holly, Breakfast at Tiffany’s. I apologize to those of you who are not fans of Audrey, but this kiss just had to be here. It had to. Its Audrey and George, looking fabulous in their trench coats, as rain comes down around them and they scream about not belonging to anyone at all. Then, all of a sudden they’re professing their undying love for one another. And kissing. This is the stuff of romance, folks.

1. Noah and Allie, The Notebook. I tried to be objective when ranking these kisses. But before I even sat down to write this, I knew Noah and Allie were going to be my number one. When I think of movie kisses, this is what I think of.  In my opinion nothing can quite compare. I mean first off, it’s raining, and second of all they’re fighting, and third, these two have been pining away for each other for years.  All that pent up emotion, and anger and passion finally explode. In the best way possible. They just can’t be beat. Period. The end. Cue the hot sex.

I don’t know about you ladies, but Sixpence None the Richer’s Kiss Me is on repeat in my head right now. And I’m just going to go with it…and maybe head over to YouTube and check out some of those movie clips again.

Sigh.

Giant. Ornate. Hats.

For realzies; Derby-style hats are the sh*t, for multiple reasons. For one, like all hats, they immediately cover a bad hair day. But, Derby hats are so huge and ostentatious, they can also distract from a host of other problems, such as a bad face day (don’t lie to yourself, you know you’ve had one).

That said, in addition to helping to conceal appearance issues, Derby hats are also good for drawing attention in a crowd, because, let’s face it, how often are people wearing hats with two foot brims covered in netting and ribbons and feathers and roses? They’re perfect for meeting friends in a crowded area or helping a blind date pick you out at a bar.

Also, Derby hats = insta-glamour. Whether paired with a frothy tulle ball gown or jeans and a tank top, Derby hats make a lady instantly look fabulously feminine and alluring. Don’t believe me? Watch an Audrey Hepburn movie and then try to tell me megahats aren’t the sh*t.

But the best thing about Derby hats, in my personal opinion, is that in this boring age of fashion functionality and cookie-cutter style, uber-feminine hats are freakin’ fun. Even the so-called “fashion forward” take clothes so seriously and buy the same high-waisted pants/secretary blouses/oversize cardigans/blah blah blah over and over again…let’s get some variety in here, damn it! It’s time to embrace our inner four (or eighty)-year-olds!

In short, I’m bringing back the Derby hat. I expect initial resistance from the general public (i.e. finger-pointing, snickering, maybe some drive-by eggings), but I am a fabulous enough person and it is a fabulous enough item that I’m confident it will eventually catch on.

And if it doesn’t? F**k it. Enjoy your bad face days, suckers.

On this day in 1920 the 19th Ammendment was added to the Constitution, giving women the right to vote. And in honor of that momentous occasion, today has been named Women’s Equality Day. We have come a mighty long way since the days before women’s suffrage. We have women dominating in arenas that formerly were dude-only territory: sports, politics, and even entertainment (remember learning about the times when men played women in Shakespearean plays?).

Despite our amazing advances, there are still those few women who just don’t really seem to be helping the cause. In fact, they might just be ruining it for the rest of us. Let’s face it, society today has become media obsessed and some (not all) of the women dominating the spotlight nowadays may be taking us a few steps back. What happened to the positive female role models of the past?

Here’s what I mean:

Grace Kelly vs. Heidi Montag

Grace Kelly was an American actress turned Princess of Monaco. She was the embodiment of class and style. Today we have Heidi Montag. Not to say there aren’t other celebs who may come close to Grace Kelly’s overall awesomeness, but Mrs. Pratt puts a damper on women today. Aside from Heidi’s lack of talent, I doubt you’d ever see Princess Grace rolling on the beach in a bikini lip syncing to her latest (notsomuch) hit and being filmed by Prince Rainier.

Jackie O vs. Megan Fox

The Kennedy’s were a form of American royalty back in the day. Jacqueline Kennedy was the “it” girl during, and even after, her husband’s time in office. She had timeless style and always handled things with poise and class, be it her husband’s alleged affair or his untimely death. Jackie was an educated woman who was well-spoken and intellectual, not to mention beautiful. She proved once and for all that it was possible to have beauty and brains, but that theory is being challenged by the one and only, Megan Fox.

Jackie O was once quoted saying, ”What is sad for women of my generation is that they weren’t supposed to work if they had families. What were they going to do when the children are grown – watch the raindrops coming down the window pane?”
Megan, however, has said this about women: “I come across as confident and [women] assume that means that I think I’m hot sh*t. And that makes them feel bad about themselves and so they hate me.” Right.

Audrey Hepburn Vs. Miley Cyrus

Audrey Hepburn. Just another style icon in American history whose movies have become classics. The woman is beautiful, well-spoken, and forward thinking. Now there is a true role model. Miley, however, is just annoying. She’s got hits with Hannah Montana and some pretty decent songs. I love “The Climb,” and I sing it out loud in my car, but what does a 16-year-old girl know about moving mountains? And, when your demographic is 9-year-old girls, what kind of message are you sending when you grind up next to a stripper pole?

Princess Diana vs. Paris Hilton

Princess Di is timeless. The poor woman went through hell with the royal family, but held herself together in a sophisticated manner. And if we even try to go into her list of humanitarian work, we’d be here forever. While Paris Hilton has been referred to as “American royalty,” um, she’s not. I know she said she wants to be like Princess Di in that lovely documentary she did for more publicity to get people to know the real her, but, seriously Paris, you don’t even come close.
