Who or what inspires your style? Many of us use actresses (like Sanoe Lake or Lisa Bonet) as style inspiration, even though, most of the time, they are being dressed from head to toe by the best stylists.

Which we don’t have.

And sometimes it’s damn near impossible to work their Hollywood looks into our not-so-Hollywood lives. I’ve made it my mission to tap into the mind of a fashion stylist and show you how to take your style inspiration – whatever it may be – and make it more you!

If you haven’t seen The Virgin Suicides, go see it! RIGHT NOW!  Directed by Sofia Coppola, another style icon, you can see how the 5 Lisbon sisters’ lives unfold in this dreamy and mysterious story (so mysterious, it almost seems true).  Originally based on the book by Jeffery Eugenides, the story is set in the 1970s in a town about 15 minutes away from where I live.

All of the sisters live in the kind of home where it’s a huge deal if they can actually be allowed to go to their Homecoming dance.  If these girls are late for curfew, they’re pulled out of school and under house arrest (unlike me where when I’m late for curfew my parents just…go back to sleep). Yeah, it’s not easy being a Lisbon sister. But despite  the strict dictators watching their back, the sisters manage to create their own distinct identities and styles, Lux especially.

Lux stands out not because she’s the most rebellious of the sisters, but because she’s a little more flirty in the way she dresses.  Her goal is to make those teen boys melt like a popsicle without doing anything more than showing a little shoulder or sunbathing in the front yard. I love Lux’s style because it’s romantic and simple, with a slight nod to the ’70s. On her it wasn’t vintage – because, duh, her story was set in the ’70s – but for me in 2010, Lux’s style is the perfect mix of light and vintage for the summer months. It’s dreamy and reminds me (as corny as this may sound) of sunshine, even though her life was the complete opposite of that.

Shoes, Dress, Bangle, Sunglasses

The most important thing to keep in mind when going for Lux’s style is romance. You want a dress with a little flirt in it; something flowy, flowery, soft. This dress is all three and allows you to show off a little skin but still look totally innocent. (The flowers on this dress are also eerily similar to those on Lux’s homecoming dress.)  I just love the modern style mixed with a vintage floral print that is spot on for summer.

The woven wedge sandals and gold aviators add to the 1970s feel without going overboard. And, lastly, the single gold bangle adds just enough je ne se quoi to the outfit to dress it up while maintaining a casual, “I just slipped this on” sorta feel. Put it all together and you’ve got a summer ‘fit that will make the boys swoon, just like the one and only Lux Lisbon.

While I may be the only person on this site who is so not up to date on The Hills – I just feel like I lose 50 million brain cells everytime I watch that show – I have to admit I do like this look.

It’s great for class – casual, yet pulled together- and screams “I’m a regular person- but not that regular- I stand out. I should be on TV for doing absolutely NOTHING!” (And really – who doesn’t want to have a look that screams that?!)

The hat makes this look a little different, adorable, and covers up your dirty hair that you didn’t have time to wash after you hit snooze 6 times…

Audrina rocks this hat in white, but my pick would be yellow. That extra pop of color just makes this outfit that much cuter.

Black Denim Skinny Jeans

The zippers are cute for flats/pumps- but these jeans are also best for tucking into boots. Skinnies are an easy way to take a boring outfit and make it fabulous.

Bracelets

Buy this Motley Bangle set, or throw on an assortment of what you have at home. You can mix and match just about anything – chunky and fine, silver and gold, jeweled and plain…the possibilities are endless.

Aviators

Cute, chic and totally cover up that mess of a face for your 8am class.

Sheer Tee (in oatmeal)

Please, I beg of you, do not wear a black bra underneath it. Unless your name is Carrie Bradshaw this look is just. not. cute. If your complexion is pasty like mine, then I would stay away from the oatmeal and do a brighter color instead. Either way, solid tees are the way to go to keep this look on the classy (instead of so trendy you will be out of style by lunch) look.

What more could you ask for in a bag?

When he arrives at the Palms, in all his hoodie rocking glory, Jeremy storms into the studio like he owns it (in his delusional post-coke bender world, he probably does.) He wastes no time in bragging to anyone who will listen (the people Dina pays to sit around the studio) about how sick of a producer he is. This is the first of many examples of unprofessional behavior that Jeremy chooses to demonstrate. Big surprise, Jeremy’s shamelessly plugging his shiz on Ali & Dina’s pay. Ali–realizing good ol’ Jer isn’t even in the studio with her, but in another room playing his Garage Band mixes for studio execs rolling their eyes at him– gets an inkling that Jeremy be more concerned with his career than hers. GASP!

After closing his tricked out Myspace page, Jeremy tells Ali it’s important that they not waste any time, as they only have 6 hours in the studio and Jeremy has finished pimping himself out to those who do not care. Ali is visibly upset at her whack producer, and I’ve got to say I’m on her side. Yes, I obviously saw this coming from episode one, but not everyone is blessed with the strong sense of prescience I possess (Ok and the editors made it pretty damn obvious). But Ali seems hurt, confused and betrayed: Jeremy was using her. We’ve all been there.

Ali’s natural reaction to this insult is the kneejerk response of any 14 year old girl– passive aggressive sabotage. Suddenly, she’s just not “feelin’” Jeremy’s tracks. I think this is the music industry equivalent of “It’s not you, it’s me.” However, Ali is hesitant to upset Jeremy by telling him his song blows, so she has her vocal coach do it for her… while she sits next to her smirking. After they drag Jeremy away from the camera (he’s been waxing philosophical about his dope beats, Real World Confessional style), they break the news that it just ain’t happening for Ali.

Surprise surprise, Jeremy’s inappropriate behavior continues as he blames Ali for not liking his lame ass song. Their argument gets so heated that Ali storms out of the studio. Jeremy is insulted, but insists that he can go “drop his record” somewhere else.

After he moans and bitches to the entire Studio at the Palms’ staff, Jeremy realizes that Ali has the right to dislike his beats.

He calls Ali to beg for her forgiveness, only to receive the ultimate breakup dismissal: Ali ends this toxic relationship via phone. And she goes the whole 9 yards with “You’re cool and sweet, but it’s just not working out, sorry!” Jeremy, always the epitome of maturity, gets pissed and sulks off down the hallway, hopefully never to return.

Dina, who’s been insisting to us that she does not spend enough time on herself, has just returned from the salon and gym, where she was personally trained by a guy who plays for this team. She also has spent her “me” time attempting to convert Dakota to her immoral ways by introducing him to Hef (whom he politely wishes happy birthday), Holly, Kendra and Bridget. I would like to note that Cody remained the unwavering picture of genteel as he called the Girls “very pretty” and confirms his belief in monogamy (that’s my man!)

Anyways, Dina is slightly dismayed to learn that the recording sesh has gone to Hell in a handbasket during her absence. After all, Jeremy told her it was “gonna be hot” (Incidentally, any guy who speaks like that is absolutely not to be trusted, come on Dina baby!) Nonetheless, Dina says “I told you so” about Jeremy’s sucky song and tells Ali she’ll clean up the mess. I can’t help but wonder if that is the healthiest parenting method, but who am I to question the techniques used to raise future substance abusers and pretend lesbians.

Dina calls Phil Maloof to tell him about the snag that they’ve hit, and tells him “Uh, yea you have a week to find me a new song.” Leaving us all on the edge of our seats to see what happens…

E-man comes back into the studio to pick up the pieces Jeremy left behind and hopefully write Ali a decent track. Everyone seemed pleased with the few he’s already produced, and I am confident that they will sound eerily similar (if not exactly the same).

Cody arranges for Dina a surprise audience of middle aged tourist women for some reason unknown to me. But hey, Cody can do no wrong so I’m sure it will end well. There was also mentioning of Dina’s Rockettes fame, so hopefully we’ll get to experience some cougar high kicking!

Oversized Frames: This look has been around for a few years now and was taken mainstream by the likes of Nicole Richie and the Olsen Twins. While it’ll eventually go out of fashion, don’t expect that to happen for the next couple of years. This look doesn’t work for every face shape, but if you can rock it, it can be a blast. You can go for many different shapes; square, round, oval. We’re even seeing octagonal and heart shapes! And the color combos are endless. Classic black gives an Audrey Hepburn look, while going for a fun, funky color and shape allows a whole new feeling. The best advice is to try these glasses on and make sure they don’t take over your face, then have fun with it!

Ray-Ban Wayfarers: This vintage style reemerged in 2007 and is still being seen on celebs such as Kate Moss and Paris Hilton. Of course the classic black frame is in, as are the brightly colored frames. New this year, though, are the two-toned frames to add a little spice.

70′s Inspired Thick, Plastic Frames: The 80′s trend is leaving us, but the 70′s trend remains popular and that means thick, plastic frames in all shapes and colors are popular once again. My best advice: when choosing a style of retro sunglasses, make sure you pick a decade that is currently in trend and don’t go overboard on the color or print of the frames; with the thickness of the 70′s frame, you don’t need too much.

Round, “John Lennon” Glasses: An offspring of the thick 70′s frame trend, the round frames trend has been seen all over the runways from Betsey Johnson to Moschino and everyone from Target to Ralph Lauren are taking the cue and running with it. Again, these frames won’t work for all face shapes, so try ‘em on before jumping on this bandwagon.

Tortoise Shell: While you won’t be finding real tortoise shell out there (we’re much more animal and eco-friendly these days), faux tortoise shell will help fulfill the desire for an exotic look this season.

Aviators: Another continuing trend, the look and style of one of 2007′s biggest trends has barely changed, which means recycling last year’s aviators is completely acceptable and will help out with the budget in this declining economy.

Gradient Lens: Looking ahead to late Summer/Fall, gradient lens (where color changes from black to clear) will be extremely popular, though hard to deal with in the middle of Summer due to the intensity of the sun. They’re a fun way to add a twist on your favorite style and are a fresh look for 2008, so keep them in mind.

The fun of all of these trends is that they can be mixed together to create your own special look; oversize aviators, round tortoise shell frames, 70′s inspired frames with gradient lenses, you can put ‘em all together to add a personal punch to your summer look.

For those of us on a budget (or who wanna indulge in all of this summer’s trends), there are plenty of options out there. Urban Outfitters and Target have a vast array of glasses in the $18-$20 range, which can be found in their stores or on their websites. Forever 21 is an even better option with tons of glasses that fit all of these trends for under $10!

If you really want some designer specs, but don’t have a couple Benjamins to drop, my suggestion is to head over to your local discount store (Filene’s Basement, Loehmann’s, etc.); with all of the style recycling this year, you can usually get some adorable glasses at a discounted price, and no one has to know they are “so last season”.

It took quite some time to calm Maggie down enough to even understand her screams. All I understood was, “How could he do that to me!?” I feared the worst and made mental plans for how I would kill her boyfriend for whatever horrible thing he did to make her this upset.

And then I heard what she was saying:

“HE FARTED! He farted in front of me!”

Maggie went on to explain that upon letting the gassy offender go, Steve looked at the horror written all over her face and said, “What? I thought we were at that point.”

Then she broke down into tears.

And I have to say, I can’t blame her. First of all, Maggie is a WASP to the core. WASPs wear pearls and pink Polo’s. WASPs do not enjoy listening to their mates fart. But even more, what is this “point” that Steve speaks of? Why does he suddenly think it is OK to let loose and cut el queso in front of his lady?

It could be that he looks at her like a sister/guy friend and feels comfortable. Or it could be that he really cares about her and realizes that she is going to be around for awhile so there is no point in making excuses and running out of the room every time his lunch comes back to haunt him. It might also be that he had too many eggs for breakfast, had a little gassy accident and didn’t know what else to say.

Being “that girl” – you know, the one the guys always find it ok to fart in front of – I decided to ask some of my boys about their farting standards. And I found quite a varied response.

Some guys say they will fart in front of anyone; that it is natural, and they don’t care who is around when they have an impending gas explosion.

Me: But what if it is a girl you are trying to get with?

Anonymous Boy: I might think about it but I’ll still do it. You can’t control it.

Others, however, will only do it in front of people they feel completely comfortable with: girlfriends, their “boys”, or those few “lucky” gals (like me) they hang out with. Farting, then, is an honor given only to those worthy of being in the company of such a toxic emission. Apparently, then, I should feel honored to be given the opportunity to hear/smell/experience my friends’ farts.

And there are still others who do everything in their power to hold in the gas, no matter what the consequences are: stomach aches, cheek clenching, constant running to another room.

All boys, however, agreed that they didn’t want to hear their girls fart no matter what. In fact, many tried to fight the idea that women even know how to fart in the first place. Don’t worry; I showed them that we did.

I’ll start with my own personal favorite, the shades I picked up at Urban Outfitters yesterday. Gratuitously oversized, 80s chic, they tell the world that I’m too damn cool to worry about actually looking it. I recommend going with either the red or the white.

For those hippie chicks, a pair of hand-painted vintage inspired sunglasses to pair with your scandalously short denim cut-offs, and flowing locks. Very cute, very cheap, damn I love Urban Outfitters.

Handpainted Vintage Sunglasses: $24

For the sorority set, here’s something to pair with your pastel pink polo-shirt and ribbon belt. I know avaitors are a little mainstream, but trust me, it looks really good with a popped polo.

These are a little more expensive, but you’re good for it: Ray Ban Aviators about $120

And for you sex kittens, it’s time to channel your inner Lolita. Guys love that shit. Since you’re already in Urban Outfitters picking up the other stuff, toss this in your shopping tote and prepare to start picking up older, perhaps saucier men, than your average frat boy. I’m envisioning…these heart sunglasses, little white sundress, maybe some Celeste satin wedges from Jcrew, topped off with a charm bracelet.
